Random question..crushing powder to be finer ?

Re: Random question..crushing powder to be finer ?

Not a good idea! It would change the burn rate from gun powder to a flash powder. More than likely would blow the gun up in your face.

Then you might get a static charge and get a suprise.

Leave them in the intended form.

haha yea i figured it would end up going something undesirable and by no means would I ever try something like this except in a strictly controlled environment...

But I was just curious

^^^LMAO!^^^

Some manufacturers have advised against even tumbling loaded rounds in a vibe tumbler because of the "chance" it could partially break down into finer powder and create an overpressure condition.
Don't be a Public Service Announcement!

It sounds like a very ambitious attempt at the Darwin Award! I think you have a very good shot at success if you attempt your controlled experiment.

Gets popcorn...Makes note to check "Odd News" on Yahoo more often.

You would be treading on very dangerous grounds if you tried this for all the reason posted.

Re: Random question..crushing powder to be finer ?

haha no worries I'm smart enough to know not to do this..

It was just out of curiosity. I assumed finer particles would burn much faster but I didn't know what exactly that would result in.

Re: Random question..crushing powder to be finer ?

The modern powders are in specific forms, and with specific coatings to control the rate of burn.
Crushing the powder gives the smaller particles a larger surface area in which to give more volume to burn, and quicker. The old time black powder consisted of small particles or even in fine powder form, which is why it burned sooo fast and makes great bombs.
I don't think there is a way to experiment with crushing smokeless powder and igniting it in a "controlled experiment". You won't have any idea how fast it will burn. The only control you have is the amount of powder in a pile, and standing back with a fire extinguisher, welding goggles and burn ointment.

If you have a buddy that works in a lab you could run your own experiment with a bomb calorimeter.

Can a mailbox be considered a "calorimeter"???

Yep, but has to be wrapped in NASA grade tinfoil.
