wich rangefinder will truly range deer and elk out to 500 plus?i tried bushnell.nikon and leupold in the field and was not impressed with the models i had on hand.

swarovski is the best on the market. Its rated out to 1500, but in perfect conditions it will read out to 1800

Leica CRF 1200 is my choice... fits in your pocket, is waterproof and has fantastic image clarity. Buy once - cry once!

Yep, I've ranged Elk at 1800+ with mine, next up is the Zeiss a good 1300 yard range finder that will do 1500 sometimes. The Zeiss and the Swaro are both better than the Lieca's IME although not as small

1300 yards was the furthest I've tried my Swarovski on deer and it worked great. Very consistent readings.

I have the Bushnell 1500 ARC and I really like it. On trees and big rocks, I've easily ranged 1600+ yards.
I think they are good quality for the money. And they work.

I really like my Leica CRF 1200 due to its size. It is perfect for nearly every hunting application.
The Swarovski is great, but its a little larger and more costly. If you want to range over 1,000 yards the Swarovski is the way to go.

The leica works well. The swarovski works great. But the aim circle on the swarzki is way to big. Does anyone here have a leica that they don't like and why? I am looking at one to buy in the next day or so. My lupey is not what I want.

Leica CRF 1200 is a great pocket sized rangefinder. 500 yards is not a problem even on non-reflective surfaces. I routinely range out to 1000 yards with mine on stumps, trees, etc. The glass in it also makes it a decent pocket spotting monocular for what it is. It's small and light. It truly fits in your pocket.

When does it not want to work? I hear of people not liking them and cant figure out why. Tried the one at the store today and it worked great just outside. That doesnt mean I got to try it out the way I wanted to. I just would like to know what owners think before dropping that kind of money.

The only time I don't like the CRF 1200 is when I am trying to range at the upper end of it's ability. It will range to 1200, but you'll need something the size of a truck to range at that distance consistently.

Probably not. But one past 1100 would most likely be out of the question, unless it had a large tree or boulder close to it.

I had a nikon 1200. That pos broke. Now I have a Leica 1200. Works great. Took a 50mph tumble and still works. Doesn't work well/at all in rain/fog. Thinking of getting a swarvarski (sp?) as a back up.
