RANGE PICKUP BRASS - SHOW, ASK, AND TELL

Just received a bunch of range pickup brass, sorted by headstamp…

Are these artifacts from firing, or someone marking each and every one of their .223 Remington brass?

If the latter, what tool would it have been?

Interesting. Never seen anything like that before.

A different batch of range pick - ups.

Moving from left to right, one sees the necks getting wider towards the shoulder, with the rims of the “pilgrim hats” getting narrower. The angle between the neck and shoulders is lost in some, leaving only a smooth, Mt. Fuji kind of curve.

Overgassed, early extraction?

Excessively annealed?

I would bet a little bit of money those were fired from a Polish Beryl 5.56 AK. The Poles had them in AFG and it is the only rifle I have ever seen that does that exact mark so deep to brass.

Makes sense, slamming the rims against a fixed ejector…



Just found out that Ruger Mini 14s do this, too…
