I was trying to find a load that would give me good accuracy in my Larue but reach 2750 fps. (So the load would match my Nightforce scopes BDC reticle) I was hoping tac would work with magnum primers. I read on line that the mag primers helped with this powder to get a more efficient burn which would help accuracy. Such was not the case. Group size in the Larue was a lack luster 1.15. I also tested Varget and Reloader 15. Fortunately I found Varget to be just as accurate as the Vitavory N135 I had been using as my main load. Unfortunately it was just as slow.

I also used a Burris Scope I got recently to test the accuracy on my Colt and Novekse and 22 lr Spikes carbines. My Noveske did not shoot as well as it usually does today. I was a bit disappointed. The Colt shot better than I thought it would and it out shot my Noveske today.

I had fun with that scope on the Spikes. I sighted it in at 100 yards and fired some 5 shot groups. I then found out where to hold at 178 yards and was shooting .22's at a metal disk. I had to hold way high at the 700 yard mark in the scope.

Re: Range Report 9-20-10

Hmm I was actually pretty happy with the Varget groups. .63 average is not bad in my experience. Not sure on the extreme spread. Its common from my chrono data in the past.
I know I have more to learn.

Re: Range Report 9-20-10

Precision at 100y, ES doesnt matter much. With the ES that you are having, that should/will make a difference in grouping the farther out you shoot. ES of 85 fps at 600 yards is significant.

Re: Range Report 9-20-10

This is a 400 yard target fired in the Larue.

This load has performed well for me to 500 yards.
(21.8 grains of N135 with 77 grain SMK)

What kind of extreme spread are you getting?

Re: Range Report 9-20-10

Putting your numbers into JBM with the 24.4g Varget load and the 77g SMK bullet, I got some interesting numbers. If you use the low velocity of 2519fps, I get 126.1 inches of drop at 600 yards with 46.8 inches of wind drift with 10 mph cross wind. The same bullet at 2604fps(high velocity), I get 116.5 inches of drop with 44.4 inches of wind drift. So with just velocity changes, you will see a 9.6 inches of drop and 2.4 inches of drift differences between your two shots with the same hold.

Your ES was 85fps with a SD of 34. Most people recommend ES less than 30 fps with SD in the single digits if possible.

Re: Range Report 9-20-10

Thanks. I am new to the long range shooting game so I will work on making the loads more consistent.
