Broz gave me a few of the 215gr Berger Hybrids to test in the 308. Here's the results from the range.

Load:
Berger 215gr Hybrid, moly'd
Win brass
CCI 200
RL-17, 49.0gr (START LOWER FOR SAFETY)
OAL 3.10"

Environmentals: 30F, 25.5 Hg, wind 2-7mph from 3 o'clock, 4500' elevation.

Rifles:
Rem 700 308 varmint, 1/12 twist, 20.5", HTG, MK4 3.5-10x40.

I had 20 bullets. Ended up shooting five over the chrono, and fifteen at 100 yard target, three groups of five.

Chrony F1 results at 30 feet from muzzle:

20.5" - 2508, error, 2503

26" - 2602, 2605

The error was followed by a low battery indicator (I think from the cool temp). I had to warm up the 9V battery in my pocket then reset the chrono and shoot through it quickly.

Accuracy:

First group, 20.5" rig, five shots were 2" horizontal, and .5" vertical. All holes looked like good stability. I was actually fairly surprised the 215 would be stable at 1/12 twist, 2500-2600 fps. The bullet is 1.62" long. The horizontal spread is probably my form being a little ganked up, bipod too low. But hey, I shot it, so I'll own it.

Second group, 20.5" rig, five shots in a round pattern .84" wide by .86" tall, .96" furthest center to center. That's solid sub-moa. I had elevated the bipod and tightened up my position.

Third group, 26" rig, five shots in a fairly round group, one called flyer high. Group .30" wide by 1.1" tall. Minus the called flyer the remaining four went into .30" wide by .58" tall. That shows potential for consistent .5 moa accuracy.

That was all twenty shots. I had hoped to take it out to 1200 yards or so with five rounds, but my first five-round group was so schitty I decided to unphuck myself and try again.

I'm still shooting the 208 AMax as my go-to bullet. But since Broz handed me 20 of these 215s to try out, I wanted to document and share my findings.

For S&G, here's a traj table for the 215 out to a mile, with a MV of 2600 fps, el 4500':

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

That's pretty good Shane, didn't think the 308 would have pushed heavies that well. Good report.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

Awesome Shane! Your results mirror mine with light bullets, almost 100fps difference between my 20" factory tactical and my 26" varmint with 155 and 175 grain bullets but using Varget. I would have never guessed you would be 2600 with a 215g though looks like RL17 is working well.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

Interesting. They are on my list to try in a 26" 11-twist with RE17. Hope you will post 1000-yard groups. What's the calculated BC?

pretty impressive!

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

I'll be sticking with the 208 AMax for my regular go-to bullet.

When I see some 215 Berger Hybrid available, I'll snag a box to continue this test at long range.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

MM,

Never got them to work at 340' altitude in my .308 rifle, so I saved a few for use in the 300 WM.

Thanks for the update,
DocB

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

i cant beleive the 12 twist stabilize thoes monster bullets...

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

Pushing that monster @ through a 1-12 at 2600 might have been what helped it out and keep in mind it was only 100yds. It might start to get a little squirrelly at greater distances.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

Keep in mind bullets tend to become more stable at distance… at least until they start the transonic stage. MM has altitude to his advantage, the lower BP helps considerably.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

I look forward to trying the 215 at 1000+ yards. I too am curious how they will hold up downrange.

I suspect, as Niles', they will remain stable at least until they get into transonic speeds.

FWIW, the 225gr Hornady shoots very well out to 1200 yards, at 2500 fps, 1/12 twist, 4500' el.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

Very Iteresting and good to know. Is that also with a 26" barrel?

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

The 225gr hornady at 2500 fps is with the 20.5" bbl.

Win brass
Moly'd 225 Hdy
48.0gr RL17
3.08" oal

It's a warm load in my rifle, but no flattened primers, or stiff bolt. My rifle has a few thousand rounds through it too, and of course a long Rem throat.

Always start low and work up with caution.

Re: Range Test: Berger 215gr Hybrid in the 308 Win

So since I cant get the 215s yet, I went and bought the 210s. I will be shooting them out of a R700 AAC-SD. Other changes to above data will include LC brass.

Questions...
I am thinking of starting at 41.5 gr of RL17 and testing 5 each of loads increasing by 0.5 grains, does this sound sane?

I know I have a long throat in my rifle as well but is 3.1 or possibly dropping down to 3.00 seem ok? I dont know how long it is but I colored a bullet with a marker and loaded it, no marks from the chamber or rifling... Not sure if that makes it ok. Sounds like a challenge though.
