I wanted to hear the pros and cons of having laser rangefinder binoculars vs. a monocular laser rangefinder plus a variable magnification binoculars? Applications are for bench and field shooting, and hunting...with the consideration of hiking or backpacking to location.

Of course there are obviously the cost and weight factors, but which option would you choose and why.

Is there enough of a reason to have a variable magnification binoculars to justify having one separately in addition to a monocular laser rangefinder? Are the accuracy of binocular rangefinders the same as monocular rangefinders?

Or would a binocular laser rangefinder alone be better for less weight and bulk?

Re: Rangefinder binocs vs. RF + variable-mag binocs

Pro / Cons from my vantage point only:

Having an all in one is nice b/c, well it is all in one.

Having separate is IMHO better b/c anything electronic can break and therefore the more time it spends safely packed it is less susceptible to damage, in a pinch a mono can still be used to observe for short periods (will lead to eye strain over time), lower cost.

I have 3 sets of binos, none are awesome but I always have a pair around. The set that is kept in my truck gets the most use. Having a set in the rig at times is so very handy. Member USSR used to have (and may still) a line on used Russian MIL binos in 7x and 8x that had MIL line reticles, they were relatively inexpensive, durable, and more than adequate for general field use.

IMHO and all that

Good luck

I have the swaro rangefinder and a pair of vortex bino's. Love them, but if I could do it all again I would have gotten the combination (geovid). I do a lot of hiking to shooting locations and hunting so its just one less thing you have to worry about carrying.

If you were just bench or field shooting, I would say it doesn't matter. However, you mention hunting, and also mention backpacking to the location.

From a hunter's perspective (and owning a pair of Leica Geovids for over 5 years), an all in one unit is THE way to go. Less things to carry, less things to fumble with when you find game, and you don't have to reacquire the game to range it. Probably also less weight to carry around with one unit than two separate ones depending on your exact choices.

From a backpacker's perspective, space is usually at a premium in my pack. An all in one unit is, again, a no brainer. The weight issue again is obvious.

Also, as far as binos go, no thanks on the variable power. My 10X Leicas are perfect and I've never wished for less mag... if you need more then you probably should be getting a spotting scope out anyhow.

So I assume you would pick 10x45 over 8x45. But why both Leica 1600 and zeiss 10x45?
