Ranges in Ohio

I have been shooting .22lr for a few years (1/4" @50 yd(informal benchrest)). I was thinking about pushing the limits with a .308 and seeing what the new game brings. My question is "Is there a range where a .308 can stretch its legs in the central Ohio area?" I just don't want to buy a rifle that I can not get beyond its zeroing range. I don't need 1k yds. 300-600 yds is plenty. All I have been able to find online is 100 yds max.

I have no prob with joining a club as long as it's reasonable. ($100-$150/year) (spend the money on the rifle, find a place to shoot it).

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Not extremely long but Meeker Sportsmans Club has 400yds. Its
about 30-40 min north of Columbus. Annual dues are $50.

Where are you in Ohio? Might as well fill out your profile. 3 ranges that come to mind are below. TVP and Rayner's both hold matches you might be interested in attending. Great bunch of shooters at both ranges. Keep a eye on the competition section of this forum. Welcome aboard!

Briar Rabbit has about 400 yards and is $100/year for unlimited range use and there are no additional fees except for matches. http://briarrabbit.com/

Thunder Valley will allow you to stretch it out as far as you want with steel out to a mile. It's $50/year + $20 per day. http://thundervalleyprecision.com/

Rayner's has matches and is generally open for practice if you call ahead. He has steel out to 1,000 yards. It is not necessarily a typical range where you go whenever you want. Once you attend a match you'll see what I mean. They hold pistol and rifle matches every month from Feb through Oct. http://www.raynersrange.com/

Closest range to central oh meeting your requirments is going to be thunder valley in kimbolton. Check out the tactical competition section here and you'll see some posts. Driving a little farther will take you to rayners range down in blue rock. You can find rayners 2011 schedule already posted and match info listed in the same forum.

Good to know that they're are ranges out there. I thought that I would be handicapped to the Nth degree b/c I lived in a flat state with hunting laws not allowing rifles. I understand that the topograhy is not condusive to hunting deer with rifles that will push past the shotgun slug range. Finding out that there is a real range out there is enough to make me convince the wife that spending $1k+ on a rifle and another $500 on a scope is a good investment.

Not sure if too far south but here is one of the ranges I belong to.. has 50-600yd ranges. Dues are $80/year for in state residents.

+1 for TVP. They do have steel targets set at 100 yard increments up to 1200 plus a mile target. Also on their scheduled matches short(up to 550 yards) and long/intimadator(up to 1165 yards). And most importantly a great group of people.

Ohio is far from a flat state. The hills in Central Ohio and Southern Ohio are more than plentiful.

TVP is hands down the best near you. Just youtube "Thunder Valley Precision" and you'll see that Ohio is far from flat.
