Rather than spending $1000+ on a new .308

I have an old excellent shape Ruger M77 in.35 Whelen. Would it be worth putting a new precision .30'06 barrel in 5R rifling on this action? Would it fit the bill of all the new trendy .308? It sits in a very nice HS Precision stock. FYI: I have a great M1 Garand in 30'06 that it would complement. Basically is the action good enough?

The Ruger actions are good actions , alot of folks don't like to work on them and the angled front screw makes it a pain in the ass to bed but you can build a very accurate rifle on that action.
Just because its a long action doesn't meen you have to go with a long round , you could go with a 308 and have it throated for longer bullets or go with a 284 based case
