RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

I loaded about 100 rounds of 308 too many before my Oehler 35P arrived. So I want to change the charge in them. I bought the RCBS with 30 cal collet, pulled a bullet, easy enough, but the bullet looks crimped enough to be destroyed. Are these not designed to save the bullet? What am I doing wrong? My kinetic bullet puller looks like it's going to break, but at least it keeps all the parts intact.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

The rifling in your bore will do more damage to the bullets when fired than the puller. If nothing else just load them for practice.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

You don't have to crank down on the collet very hard at all to pull the round. Just try some different amounts of tightness until you get the feel for how tight it needs to be to pull without damaging the bullet.
Unless they are crimped in, I can usually pull a round with a minimal amount of scoring on the bullet.

Yeah a kinetic (hammer style) bullet puller is hard on them. </div></div>

Dillon's kinetic puller does not harm the bullets in any way shape or form

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

When I have to use my RCBS puller I don't use the colet that comes with the kit. I use a standard shell holder, holds the rim snuggly and want slip out.
I also put a few cleaning patches in the bottom to catch the bullet and protect the tip.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

ltfirehunter,
I think he is talking about the collet style press mounted puller and not the RCBS impact puller which I agree works fine with shell holders.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

I just pulled 100 300 gn 338 lapua bullets with the rcbs collet die (some of the bullets were pulled twice, long story!). While there was a noticable ring on the bullet it was not in a critical area and all bullets grouped 3/8 moa or under, sooo In my opinion pulling them had absolutely no affect on accuracy.

Pull away! And if you dont want to take a chance I would be happy to properly dispose of the pulled bullets for you!!

My kinetic hammer is now relegated to the junk box!

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Pull away. I pulled more bullets than I care to remember, just because I only neck size my brass for my bolt guns. Don't notice much of accuracy issues. Again, I don't shoot F-class, or BR, so as long as it is MOA or better it's good enough for me. Just be gentle when you pull it. It should be fine.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

I have to agree,I have pulled many with the Hornaday collet tool. Works great and the bullets are fine.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Haha just bought a RCBS kinetic today. Figured out my brass was at the end of it's life and decided to pull +40 bullets. Worked for me. Bullets are fine with just some scratches on the sides. Not a huge deal for me as I am only shooting for fun not in any competitions.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

for everyone posting about the RCBS Kinetic puller, please note this is NOT what the OP is talking about. RCBS also makes a PRESS MOUNTED collet puller.

This looks like a reloading die and you tighten it down onto the bullet and use the press arm to remove the bullet.

I hope this prevents any further misunderstandings, no one said anything about a kinetic puller harming bullets.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Good clarification madd0c ... I was still unsure on the thread's intent and I'm not familiar with the press mounted puller. I too was in the "kinetic pullers gererally hurt the bullets" camp.

Just out of curiousity, targa, how much does this style of bullet puller sell for?

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Bear: die with collet from Graf and sons for $26, Sorry that i didn't make it clear i was talking about the press mounted die bullet puller. Btw, it fits fine on a Dillon 550 with the powder measure removed.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

After using 3 different kinetic pullers and using an RCBS collet type, I bought a Hornady cam-loc design. That is the berries. That's the only one I've used since I got it.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Didn't know about the Hornady.: I pulled some more tonight with the RCBS collet and discovered it only needs a few lbs of pressure. Less than an eighth of a turn. Just a light scoring mark now. Thanks for the help.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

I borrowed a buddy's kinetic puller. After about 10 minutes I ordered the RCBS collet puller.
Mine barely makes a mark on the bullets. After you use it for a while you'll get a feel for how little pressure it really takes to grip the bullet.

Re: RCBS Bullet Puller - can you save the bullet?

Yep the RCBS Collet pullet only needs about 1/8 of a turn after initial tightening to pull the bullets onless they are heavily crimped. Barely get any marks on the bullets and they shoot fine.

it all depends on the bullets, some you can pull out with less tension, some will just end up with a ring mark, they still shoot fine, forget about it. Wow, too much time on the internet, go shoot.

As others have said just experiment with the amount of pressure you use, I have pulled a bunch of 70gr TNT's almost no marks and shot great when reloaded.
