I have a DTA with a 338 barrel conversion. The barrel is fluted and is 26" long. I am thinking about cutting it down to 23" and slimming the barrel down considerably. Is this possible? Can I drop a few lbs this way, or only oz's. I know that this will reduce the accuracy after the first few shots (at least I think this will happen), but I would like to lighten the gun for hunting.

Thanks for the info.

Cut rifled barrels are ok, if it is recontoured very slowly with shallow cuts and lots of cooling. Button rifled or hammer forged barrels are a no-no. This was confirmed by Kreiger, GAP, and Rock Creek.

moving metal around on a already completed barrel such as fluting ...or recontouring goofs on the lands and grooves already in place....you can do it...but you will not have any luck in retaining groups and or accurracy.

Right, I wouldn't mess with a previously fluted barrel.
