Rechambering long action 3006 question

Hello:

I just purchased a browning bolt 3006 which someone cut the barrel down to 16 inches. I plan to rebarrel it with a 20 inch Walther and am wondering which caliber to chamber it to. I have no problems with the 06, however being older, would like to consider a smaller caliber. Maybe a 270, or 2506. What's your opinions of changing these to a AI chamber.

Since it's a long action, I'd appreciate your suggestions! I'm not shooting bear or anything needing a heavy projectile.

Depending on when your "bolt" was made, you may or may not be able to get the barrel off. Browning went to a very fine thread and strong epoxy gluing the barrel into the receiver oh about 8 years ago. Many smiths won't take the job for fear of ruining the action. My smith won't take one in for a rebarrel as he stripped the receiver threads out with the barrel even after heating it to try to break the epoxy loose.

Sadly the latest generation Winchester actions (not FNs) have the same threads and epoxy.

Not the answer you were looking for, but something to be aware of. Find out when it was made before taking any action around a rebarrel.
