Can anyone recommend a smith who can take a factory new Remington 700 short action with .308 bolt face and convert the bolt to accept a Savage floating / interchangeable bolt face(s) in both .223 and .308?

Looking to make a rifle with a PacNor Rem. nut and barrels in 300 Whisper or 300 Blackout and 6.5 Creedmor or 6.5X47 Lapua.

Any idea of cost for the conversion, two bolt faces, and two barrels? This newbie needs help!

Re: Recommendation - Rem. 700 Floating Bolt Face???

You would think that in today's world of DIYer's that a company out there would offer some of the popular features of the Savage to be used on other actions.

It would benefit those of us who a)don't have the money to buy a custom action b) can't fork out the $350 for action truing and/or having a gunsmith install a barrel c) just like to do things ourselves.

If I could request here is what I would want:

1. A company that manufactures a bolt with a floating bolt head like the Savage for the Remington action

2. Barrel nuts that one can use with a Remington action so a DIYer can do it in his/her own workshop

3. Barrels available to fit #2

I bet 2 and 3 already exist, it's just #1 that probably doesn't.

I personally don't like the Savage and Stevens actions. I don't like their aesthetics. That may seem trivial, but it is what it is. That's why I don't own a Savage, but I know they are good rifles.

Plus, when I was growing up hunting and shooting Savages were known for being the bottom of the barrel. I know that isn't true now.

I understand the benefits of the floating bolt head and the barrel nut design, But why would you buy a Remington and then try your best to turn it into a Savage? If you wanted all the design features of the Savage, start with one.

That said, I have seen the barrel nut design for Remingtons, http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,25549.0.html

Good question, but my first post is just "thinking-out-loud".

I guess my reasons are:

1. It seems the most cost effective way for me to do my own gunsmithing

2. I don't have the necessary tools to remove and install a barrel on a Remington right now

3. On a teacher's salary I cannot afford to spend hundreds and/or thousands of dollars on semi-custom or full-custom guns

I would still like to see a floating bolt head for a Remington.

Why don't I just buy a savage? i don't like the rifle as a whole. Just personal taste.

Re: Recommendation - Rem. 700 Floating Bolt Face???

Take a look at savageshooters.com, Jim Briggs of Northland Shooters Supply offers Rem/Age barrels. I have seen threads of adding the Savage bolt face to the Rem 700 bolt, so it has been done. Contact Jim, maybe he can help.

Re: Recommendation - Rem. 700 Floating Bolt Face???

Lots of switch barrel Remingtons out there that don't use a nut. Couple of dollars more and you can buy a second bolt. Internal action wrench and a barrel vise would finish the job.

Re: Recommendation - Rem. 700 Floating Bolt Face???

I assume I can get the action wrench and barrel vise at midway or brownells?

What do you mean by a couple of dollars more to get a second bolt? A new bolt face? Or does someone manufacture a floating bolt face bolt for the 700?

So I take it there are guys out there that use the wrench and vise to put a new barrel on their 700 in their garage with no other special tools?

If so, I never realized that.

No... you can change barrels right at the range.

I've never priced em, what's the cost of two savage bolt heads plus the cost of modifying an existing Remington bolt? Weight that over the cost of a bolt from PTG...

Re: Recommendation - Rem. 700 Floating Bolt Face???

I have a R700 switch-barrel. Mine has an 18mm nut(why 18mm? don't know, bought it used) milled at the muzzle. Hold the rifle between your knees with the butt on the ground and pop the barrel off with an 18mm 6 point socket. Put the other barrel on and tighten with same. Don't have to remove action from stock or even take the bolt out. Have .308 and 6.5X.284 barrels. No barrel nut needed. Pretty standard stuff with cartridges using same bolt face. AG
