Recommendations on .260Rem brass

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I've been using Nosler and Norma. I've been told that Norma makes brass for Nosler. I've also had good luck necking up Lapua .243 brass..

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I loaded up RP for a buddy's 260 Rem, about 600 rounds worth. It was more casual shooting, but it was fine even after a couple, or few, cycles. Obviously, it's not as uniform in weight, as some other brands, but for messing around, I wouldn't hesitate to use it, were I to get a 260 Rem.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I started with Remington brass in .260. I know a lot of people here have had success with it, but not me. I experienced loose primer pockets, blown and smoked primers with once fired brass. I moved to Nolser brass and am very happy with it. I am running the same powder and velocity with no primer pocket problems. It does cost more, but you have to do zero work out of the box, except set your neck tension if desired. I am up to 4 reloads on the same brass with no problems so far. I am using H4350 with 139gr Scenar bullets running 2850 fps. I have also seen comments where people neck down Winchester 7mm-08 for .260.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I used to think Rem 260 brass was ok, now i'm using Win 7-08 brass in my 260, after 7-9 reloads the primer pockets are still tight, I run the Win 7-08 thru a redding Type s FL with a 290 bushing and the expander then after that no expander.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I am running a very similar load to Deisel's; however I am running Remmy brass. As Deisel states, the primer pockets tend to become an issue for me sometime after the 5 or 6 th time I reload them. That being said, I am happy with getting six reloads out of the Remmy and the replacing them as the primer pockets get loose.

I have tried necking up the Lapua brass and I did not find any changes in accuracy, only additional costs and labor.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I have not had much success with the Remington .260 brass. I also had loose primer pockets, blown / smoked primers with once fired brass. I have had a lot better shooting with Nosler 260 brass, Lapua and Winchester.243 brass, Winchester 7mm-08 brass, and I have even tried some necked down Win .308 brass, but that is only good for plinking. I haven't managed to get my hands on Norma brass yet. I have had the best luck with RE-17. H4350 is very good as well, just not as fast as RE-17.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

My experience with 139 Scenars was that they tended to generate more pressures, which receded considerably when I changed to 142SMK's and 140 A-Max's. I run just under 44gr of H-4350 in a 28" barrel, and chrono around 2850fps. Pockets last fine with Win Brass.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

I read a lot about the .260 brass options prior to choosing. It didn't take me long to realize that the Rem. brass would require a decent amount of prepping and culling to bring it up to speed. For me brass weight of 1.0 grain extreme spead is acceptable and nothing more. I figured that there would be plenty Rem. Brass not usable for my specs. after processing and may cost me much as Norma or Nosler ESPECIALLY after the labor.

So, I bought 100 pieces of Norma and 50 pieces of Nosler for my custom .260. Nosler are good to go out of the box as another poster said. Norma needs the bur knocked off the inside and outside of the necks and its perfect... At least perfect enough for me. I have a k&m neck turner setup to do .308 and .260. I turned a few of the Norma and quickly found that I was wasting my time... They are nearly perfect. I have three firings on most the those 100 pieces of Norma with primer pockets that are ALL 90%+. Each of those firings I have been seeing some flattening of primers and the primer pockets are holding nicely. I feel confident the Rem brass would be land fill by now. It's my guess that running mod to high pressure loads like the infamous 43.5 of h4350, which starts to flatten the primers in my gun, will still get my at least 10 firings on the Norma. If this is the case, instantly it will be a clear win over the Rem brass. I have heard of some getting 15-20 firings on Norma's .260 brass.

I haven't used any of the Nosler brass yet. I also seems very consistent in weight and neck thickness. It is also fully prepped and ready to go.

It will be hard to steer away from the Norma that is for sure. If I had more time than money or could not find Norma, and had to look to an alternative it would be Win 7-08 brass. This is because of Winchesters known quality and price. After sizing, I would then turn the necks.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

Thank you, everyone for your information. I had read that Rem, Brass had loose primer pockets after a few firings. Also off-center flash holes. I appreciate you sharing with me. This will help in my decision, once my build is complete. Knowledge via experience is a good thang.

Re: Recommendations on .260Rem brass

Any brass will open its primer pockets if the loads are hotter than ideal. I have noticed that Rem brass tends to open up a little sooner. In my estimate, this is only really telling me to look for a gentler load/node. The .260 will go the distance, even tuned down. Counting on higher velocities to solve wind correction issues is a poor solution, and exacts excessive wear on bores. This is another reason why I prefer a longer barrel. They can get the job done with less mayhem in the boiler room.
