I've decided to build a .260Rem. on a 700 SA. On my previous builds I've used Shilen barrels and am happy with them. My question is what maker, barrel length and rate of twist for 140gr. bullets (probably Berger's) do you recommend and why? As for ROT I was thinking 8.75?

Re: Recommended barrel for .260 build

I'd definatly get a 6.5mm barrel !!

I'm a dick i know

anyway , I had a Broughton 5C barrel on mine and it shot great but i've also had great luck with Kreiger and Bartlein as well as Brux , Hart , Shilen , Douglas and Pac-Nor.
Honestly I lean more toward Kreigers though.

If its plumbed up correctly it will shoot well for you I have heard of each of the barrel makers above putting out a turd and the chances are always their but all of them made good and replaced the barrel

And for the rate of twist 1-8.6 is common and works great for everything from 95gr V-max to 140 Berger

What diggler44 is saying is very true. After every perfect string (or near perfect string) of firing, the benchmark crew would chime in with <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">"That's a Benchmark barrel!"</span></span>

After I shot my string, I got the "Hey, nice try!"

Buy a Benchmark barrel. You will NOT be disappointed!

Re: Recommended barrel for .260 build

I would go 1-8" twist rate for the 140's, I have had great luck with the 6 6.5mm barrels from Brux. I shoot 130 Bergers in my 6.5 x 47L and 139 Scenars in my 6.5 x 55 AI, I shoot both barrels in F-class competitions depending on conditions and range.

Not much but I hope it helps,
