I’ve decided to add a red dot to my scoped AR frankengun for predator hunting. It has a Leupold VXR on it. I don’t use it as much as I’d like to because so many of the coyotes I call are in close - 75% of them within 50yds - and usually moving quickly. That makes getting into the scope and acquiring the target before they hit some other brush (and vanish) very difficult! I use a shotgun most of the time for that reason; but I want to try a (most likely) offset micro red dot. I’ve got some questions, though....

1. Mounting solution questions - would you suggest getting a pic rail section that will mount to my scope tube or should I be looking for a 45° offset pic rail that’ll attach to my receiver? I figured attaching to the scope tube might be easier to get on visually and I could even run it at the 12 o’clock position making it simple to toggle between the scope and the red dot. Also, this solution would keep it out of the way when the rifle is riding between my drivers seat and the center console of my truck. IF I go with a 45° offset pic rail, I’m assuming I’ll need to have some sort of riser to keep it up and away from the receiver so that it’ll be in line with my eye? Will a micro red dot (like the Sig Romeo1 Pro or the Vortex Razor red dot) in this type of arrangement create an issue with the red dot snagging on all sorts of stuff?

2. Brand recommendations - I’m looking at the Vortex and Sig red dots because I can get a good price on them but the Leupold LCO/Delta Pro is also an option. The RMR is just more than I want to spend just to try this out. Any other brands/models I should be looking at?

Sorry for the long post. Appreciate those that take the time to read it and post suggestions!

I use a 45 degree offset RMR on my brush/pig gun to supplement the scope. Works well as long as you are shooting offhand. Its much more natural than I would have thought but if I was shooting off a bipod Id probably put the red dot over the scope so its in line with the bore and just deal with the negatives.

Im sure others will chime in on the red dot- the only ones I have experience with that arent Trijicon or Aimpoints are the Primary Arms ones I put on my non-serious guns. They have all held up to a fair amount of abuse and do what they should on the cheap.

Well, this seems to be where the Griffin SPRM is supposed to shine.

Don’t attack me, just saying they seem to have the correct ergos and mounting position figured out.

The Holosun 507c and 508t are very good optics, especially for the money. I definitely prefer the RMR or SRO. But, recently I have had a chance to test and shoot a Glock 17 MOS with a Holosun 507C for a few weeks as T&E project. I am really impressed with it. I would choose it over the Vortex and Sig options.

Thanks fellas!

If I'm shooting a rifle on coyotes I'm either shooting off a pair of shooting sticks or offhand and rested on the calling rack rail. So, you have a 45º mount that clamps to a rail section and gives you another section of pic rail off the side at 45º, correct? Do you also need to incorporate a riser/mount that elevates the RMR or is the RMR pretty flat down on the angled section of pic rail?

I'll check them out. Thanks!

Mine is on a Scar17 not an AR but should be done the same I imagine. I just used a 45 degree offset rail that clamps to the top rail just in front of where the scope was mounted. No riser- trying to get it as close to the bore line as possible.
