I am looking to get a small base die to reload 5.56 for my AR. What is the difference between the standard FL die and the "S" type die? Is one better than the other? Will I see a difference in accuracy? Thanks.

Why a small base die?

S dies take neck sizing bushings.

It a semi-auto. You will be resizing the case each time the bolt slams home, and you won't need to run light neck tension.

Standard FL dies will work just fine.

But since the S-dies won't work the neck as much, he can expect better brass life. I suppose it won't have a big impact if his chamber is very oversized and the neck blows out significantly upon firing.
It's a moot point if he anneals regularly.

I agree on the small base, it's not necessary to go small base from the get go.

Depends on whats your purpose on this ar.. on my targer 24" barrel i dont use small base(wylde chamber) sometimes i got stock round specialy when RM called a ceasefire that loaded round on the chamber is bitch to pull.. but snug fit on chamber gives me better accuracy..niw on my 3gun where reability is more important thatn accuracy when comes competition i definitely use small base dies...ud rather see your gun go off than a litle error on stock case..ive seen this happen not only to me before small base fixed that..type S? Dont need on tactical more tension is better im sure your not gonna be using lapua brass on tactical.. i do use type s on my grendel simply because brass ate hard to find and expensive.i like to get the most ot it..AR brass are easy to find and cgeap..load mixed headstamp and have fun!
Just my 2 cents

I get plenty of brass once fired from a law enforcement buddy so brass life is not a concern 2-3 reloadings is fine. Mainly use the gun for tactical and 3 gun comps, but I do shoot it long rang out 700 or so occasionally. The chamber seems to eat whatever ammo I through in there. So from what I gather "S" type is not worth it but I done need a small base

Youre on the right track.. if your using same fun for 3g competition and long range target. For whatever reason when im using small base on 3gun for long range shooting a regular die gives me better accuracy.. if this happen to to you then getting a regular die for your long range ammo is ok.
