ok, so i have heard that with neck sizing you get longer brass life. all of the brass will be shot from one bolt gun after one full sizing pass as its 1x lake city match. i measured 11 rounds i have on hand and 5 were .337" and 6 were .336" and the book says subtract .001" so im looking at a .335" or so bushing? sound about right?

Procedure is nearly correct.

Measure all 11 rounds for the neck size at 2 different angles around the neck. Average 22 data points.

Amount to subtract:
0.000 benchrest shooters
0.001 tactical bolt gun applications where there is no chance of abuse between seating of the bullet and firing of the round.
0.002 tactical bolt gun applications where there is some chance of buse between seating of the bullet and final firing position
0.003 semiauto actions or severe abuse of ammo (no real need to crimp at this tension level)

Per redding, you measure the neck with your bullet of choice already pressed into the case and subtract a few thousandths to get the bushing size. I would order the size you arrived at and one above and below as wall thickness can vary batch to batch.

Re: redding S-type nech sizing dies

I would definitely get a bushing .002 smaller than your avg diameter. I never found that .001 of neck tension gives me better accuracy. .002 is where it's at in my opinion. Even .003+ is fine. I found that out by chance bc some of my lapua brass runs a bit thick compared with the rest of the lot. You may find a few cases that are thin in the mouth and won't hold the bullet. These need a smaller bushing, so therefore it is good to have a smaller one on hand.

Re: redding S-type nech sizing dies

imho, I would go .334 size bushing.
That will cover your .337 neck and give you .003 neck tension and will also cover your .336 neck and give you .002 neck tension. None of my necks are the same, I've got slight variation also. I've taken the measurements off my largest neck size and gone .003 down from that.

Hope this helps

Re: redding S-type nech sizing dies

Get a Lee Collet neck die.
It is a ugly little piece of crap next to the expensive Redding S die.

Then compare the ammo they produce.

Maybe you can get the Lee engraved or something.

Re: redding S-type nech sizing dies

lol, i actually have the lee collet die. it just didnt seem as accurate. its lake city match brass 1x. ive got 800 rounds in 100 rnd batches of different years. plus some hornady and BHG match brass i will use for the semi maybe. ill remeasure at two points, good idea. thanks all. good info in here

oh, and im gonna be-dazzle my lee, i dont have an engraver local anymore
