The bolt should close on a go gauge and not on a no go gauge. I think the difference is about .002” to .003”. I only use go gauges and try to get the headspace to a slight felt resistance when closing the bolt on a go gauge.

If your handloading and do not oversizze your brass and fireform it to your chamber properly you can get by with a huge amount of headspace. I shoot a .223 with .018 clearance.
