Rifle Scopes Regular or extended scope rail?

So via another thread I've been trying to figure out which scope to get for my soon to be delivered 700p. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I realized that I need to figure out what type of scope mount I'm going to need. Right now I'm looking for probably a picatinny rail mount with rings, but considering I've seen extended and non-extended rails I don't know which I may need. At this point I prefer the non-extended, but I don't know if that could introduce other problems with eye relief depending on the scope I get. I will say that after browsing a lot of rifle picture threads it seems as if most folks don't mount the front ring all the way toward the end of the extended mount, so maybe I only need a regular short mount. Anybody have any thoughts on mount length?

BTW at this point I'm most interested in the Leupold 15 MOA non-extended mount.

Re: Regular or extended scope rail?

I have used that Leupold rail and it fits perfect on the Rem700. Looks like it came from the factory that way. Unless you are using a scope that requires an increased eye relief, I would stick with the standard rail. It may allow for increased eye relief, but limits how far back you can move the scope, as the extended part will hit the objective bell.

Edit: The Leupold sits a little on the high side. If you get a scope with a 50mm obj, it will be a good match. If you get one with a 40mm obj, the scope will sit a little high. The Warne 20moa rail is short and sits lower than most other rails. The Warne is steel as well.
