reload with moly bullets or not?

Re: reload with moly bullets or not?

I shoot moly in a couple guns. I started using moly in 1997. Yes your load will have to be adjusted. Moly reduces pressure. Lower pressure equals lower velocity. I have a 6mm-06 Improved that would foul after 10 shots or so. I went to moly coating and I can shoot at least 50 rounds and maintain accuracy. That is the biggest benefit to moly.

I like it for hyper velocity varmint cartridges. For those > 3300 fps I like moly. I have used it in 243 Win, 6mm Rem AI, 22-250, 25-06, and I have a new 6.5-284 and a 260 Rem that I just switched to moly.

Some say you can't shoot plain bullets once you use moly. That's BS. I have a .223 Rem that only saw moly coated bullets for the first 500 rounds. I them scrubbed the bore and went to plain bullets. No problems, just rework the load to a lower powder charge. Same for my M700PSS in 308 Win. I moly coated 500 168 gr SMKs and shot them for years. I decided to go back to naked bullets and I tumbled them to remove the moly. I am still shooting some. They shoot with Fed GMM 168s just fine.

Some say moly attracts moisture and can lead to corrosion. I have not seen this in any of my guns. I have used moly in CM and SS barrels with no problems. One thing to watch out for is a ring of moly at the end of the chamber. But with regular cleaning intervals it does not build up enough to be a problem.

I cleaned with Kroil and Shooters Choice in the past. I will try a few different cleaning methods now as I am a big fan of Wipe-Out. Once you scrub the barrel clean, it may take a few rounds to get back in the group. I use a bore mop that has moly powder on it and scrub the bore. This has reduced that number of shots needed to 3-4.

I used moly in the past and went away, but find myself returning to moly for a certain application.

I like the moly in the 260,243,and the 308. You will gain more speed with the moly and will have to adjust you load. I think it is worth it. This is some people will say use it and others will say not to.
I ask the very same questions in the past. Never got anywhere with it. So I tried it for myself and made my own conclusions. I like it.

Good luck.

This is the opposite of my experience with moly. You will LOSE speed with the same load and have to increase your powder charge to get to the same velocity you had before you started using moly. With .308 case volume and propellants, for example, you might have to add .5 to .8 gr to your load to get the same velocity with a moly coated bullet.

I have a Steyr SBS tactical that I've been shooting moly through for about a decade. I can go 2-300 rounds between cleanings before I start to see any degradation in accuracy.

I experimented with moly in a .260 AAC barrel and could not achieve published velocity in this barrel until I stopped using moly. It got to the point where another grain of powder yielded no velocity gains and I was still 100fps slow.

Re: reload with moly bullets or not?

I have used the moly for 2 of my 260s and shooting the 123 laupas. I pick up fps with the load after increasing the charge. I give the load to another friend of mine and after about 200 rounds. He pickup fps.
I have always heard about the cleaning of the barrel can go longer and to add powder to the case because you will loose speed. Which is correct. After the barrel is coated good with moly I think there is another advantage.
