Re: reload with moly bullets or not?
I shoot moly in a couple guns. I started using moly in 1997. Yes your load will have to be adjusted. Moly reduces pressure. Lower pressure equals lower velocity. I have a 6mm-06 Improved that would foul after 10 shots or so. I went to moly coating and I can shoot at least 50 rounds and maintain accuracy. That is the biggest benefit to moly.
I like it for hyper velocity varmint cartridges. For those > 3300 fps I like moly. I have used it in 243 Win, 6mm Rem AI, 22-250, 25-06, and I have a new 6.5-284 and a 260 Rem that I just switched to moly.
Some say you can't shoot plain bullets once you use moly. That's BS. I have a .223 Rem that only saw moly coated bullets for the first 500 rounds. I them scrubbed the bore and went to plain bullets. No problems, just rework the load to a lower powder charge. Same for my M700PSS in 308 Win. I moly coated 500 168 gr SMKs and shot them for years. I decided to go back to naked bullets and I tumbled them to remove the moly. I am still shooting some. They shoot with Fed GMM 168s just fine.
Some say moly attracts moisture and can lead to corrosion. I have not seen this in any of my guns. I have used moly in CM and SS barrels with no problems. One thing to watch out for is a ring of moly at the end of the chamber. But with regular cleaning intervals it does not build up enough to be a problem.
I cleaned with Kroil and Shooters Choice in the past. I will try a few different cleaning methods now as I am a big fan of Wipe-Out. Once you scrub the barrel clean, it may take a few rounds to get back in the group. I use a bore mop that has moly powder on it and scrub the bore. This has reduced that number of shots needed to 3-4.
I used moly in the past and went away, but find myself returning to moly for a certain application.
