    Howdy folks...

Did a bit of load development for my old Rem 700 SPS Tactical with 18" barrel.

Loaded up RL15 at 42 gr through 44 gr in .5 increments with 168 SMK in prepped PPU Brass with Rem 9 1/2 primers. OAL 2.820"

I found it interesting that the tightest 5 shot groups of about 1/2 moa happened at 42gr. Figured the second node would happen around 44gr... but the groups open up to 1 moa at 44gr.

What are your loads for 168 smk and RL15 in a Rem 700?

I always load 42grs with the 168s, 43 if Im using Win brass, shoots a ragged hole at 100yds, just over and inch at 300. Only thing is, the velocity is just a bit over 2500fps. Then I whip out the CFE.

Couldn't setup my chrono to figure out fps yesterday which was a bummer. I figure at 42gr it should be just fine out to 600 yards right?

I was surprised that it shot consistently close to 1/2 moa when any previous load workup I did with Varget only got to 3/4 moa.

See, nobody listens to me when I say varget sucks in my 308s. In mine it's more like 3moa with Varget.

If your .308 doesn't shoot well with Varget, 4895 or 4064, it's not because of the powder.

Interesting observation. My M1a doesn't do well with RL15 but likes H4895. My bolt action doesn't like H4985 but does well with RL15.
Between the four you should find one that works well.
I load 168 grain VLDs with 42.6 grains of RL15 - loaded out to 2.915 our of my 18" bolt action rifle.
For the M1a I load 168 grain VLDs with 41.5 grains of H4895 loaded out to 2.825.

You've said this before, so if it's not the powder how do you explain the poor accuracy I get from Varget and great accuracy from RE15, 2000MR and CFE?
There are many possible explanations for that, none if which have to do with the powder manufacturer. But I do know that there is no voodoo about those powders in a .308.
