i am new to reloading and looking for help with finding out what combo will give me the power and consistency out to 1000 yds. i have remington brass. i was told to try the smk 168 gr from a buddy but have seen a lot of people using a heavier bullett. i am completely lost with what is a good choice to start with. imr4060 powder was also suggested. any opinions that might help.
thanks

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

I would try the 190 SMK for a bullet choice. Its going to perform way better than the 168's. As for powder, I can't help you with that one because I've never loaded for 30-06. I bet 4350 would work well though. If you could get the 190's going about 2750-2800fps (should be easy with an -06) I bet it would shoot great at 1000.

I've never loaded for the '06, but I've seen reports of over 2900fps w/190 SMKs and RL22.

There is a load from Montanamarine, 2900fps 26" 1:10 barrel and 190gr SMKs with RL22. Looks like a great 1000yd load.

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

IMR/H4350 can work for the .30-'06, but are too slow for use in the Garand. BTW, it would help if we knew what make and model, barrel length and twist you're loading for.

In the .30-'06 the 168 will work at 1000yd, but as others say, there are better bullets out there. For a number of reasons I prefer to limit bullet weight to 175gr.

For such bullets, consider the following to be max loads for the Garand:

46.0gr IMR4895
47.0gr IMR4064 (there is no such critter as IMR4060)
46.0gr AA2460
46.0gr 2495BR
47.0gr H4895
48.0gr BL-C2

Standard large rifle primers will take care of tubular grain powders, and Win WLR's or magnum primers will work for ball powders. Match primers are optional.

Bolt guns will likely do well with heavier bullets and slower powders, and I refer you to handloading manuals for such loads.

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

I have a 26" 1:10 twist on a 30-06, I use BLC-2 for 178 Amax, I haven't ventured hotter yet but those bullets do great.

I am awaiting some range time to try out the RL22 as I have yet to try it on Montana Marine's advice. His opinion on 190's and RL22 is that it's a very viable load at that range.

I don't like anything lighter for the 06 because it has so much case capacity available I like having stuff in the 180 weight class to throw. For 155's I use my 308

From what I've heard the 168's drop energy like it's going out of style and have a hard time getting to 1k from a 308, I shoot them less than 300 yards.

EDIT: I use CCI 250's exclusively with the ball powders because I had some failed ignitions with the CCI 200's (bullet stuck in the throat, case extracted and spilled 50+ grains of powder all over the inside of the action)

I don't know how the RL22 will act yet, so I'm going to keep the 250's in there then change it out as I get to experiment.

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

I found the 190 smk and 59.5gr of rl22 to be a good combo for my rifle. I found really good results in 178 AMAX and I think 58.5gr of RL22. I have learned my rifle does well with 175 and up and RL22. I am exparimenting with IMR4831 right now. It did OK with the 178, gonna try some 190's or heavier to see how it works.

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

I am running a 200gr Sierra Match King with 53.3grs of H4350. I use Lake City brass. Works well out to 1K.

bc77,

Your Model 70 is a 1-10" twist, as are almost all .30-06's. Get yourself some Reloader 22, and stick between 60.0gr and 61.0gr behind a 190gr Sierra MatchKing.

Re: reloading 30 06 for 1000yds

I shoot a savage 110fp 30-06 1 in 10" twist 24" barrel out to 1000 yards. I use lapua brass, remington large rifle primers, and IMR 4350. For bullets I have hit targets at 1000 using 180gr nosler ballistic tips, 168gr barnes tipped tsx, 168gr sierra matchkings & I'm just starting to fool around with the 190gr matchkings. I haven't gotten them out to 1000 yards yet, but I will.

My bread & butter bullet has been the 168gr matchking. The most accurate loads in my rifle have been around the 2600fps range for both the 168gr and 190gr bullets. Either can be pushed much faster, but not as accurately in my rifle.

I hate to say it, but you really have to see just what shoots the best in your rifle and go from there.
