I have a savage 10 precision carbine and when I use the hornady OAL gage with 178 gr AMAX I get a measurement of 2.226" average on the o-give. When I chamber a round, that the neck has been loosely closed just to hold the bullet, like you would a live round I get 2.246". Which number should I use to reload as my starting point or is it so close start with the lower number to be on the safe side?

Thanks for any advice,

Dave

if you magazine load the max length would depend on the magazine....

for my rem 700 bolt I started out at .010, .015 and .02 off the lands.. ending being that .015 gets the best grouping...
