I have acquired some Berger 308 230 gr hybrid otm tactical bullet heads. Can anyone advise on best powder to use / supply any reloading data as i cannot find any for that particular weight

Really? That's on the very heavy side for that cartridge. As in you won't get much faster than 2300fps out of a 24" barrel.

Well okay, here are some options for you, but the velocities are super shitty.

Thank you. Can you please confirm the "charge grain" number is the maximum limit?

That's just to give you a ballpark for powders, if you're a seasoned reloader. If you're still pretty new to reloading, I'd ignore this entire plan. You should be working off of published load data and the reason why you can't find any load data for a .308WIN shooting 230gr bullets is because it's not practical (unless maybe for subsonic loads).

That thread came to mind , too ,when I saw this one......
And to be honest, experimentation like that sounds fun, it’s just expensive because you need custom chambers.

The first thing you have got to learn is we don’t call them bullet heads.

Read this and initially thought @neale1943 was fucking nuts but decided to look a bit further into it and see that it may be viable, assuming the loaded round will fit in the mag and won’t be jammed into the lands or otherwise not fit cleanly into the chamber and pressure isn’t too great (ie compressed load, etc).

Ha time to kill so I loaded a 215 Berger (close enough to the 230 for these purposes) into a 308 case (no powder/primer) to see how it would look and it’s not half bad. CBTO is 2.175” and OAL is 2.937”. For comparison my 175 smk load that I use in my 308 is 2.830” OAL and 2.150” CBTO.

If he can get it launched 2200-2300 fps Ballistics AE says it will be supersonic to 1100 meters, assuming sea level, temp of 70F and humidity of 70% (used these figures given his location).

However he will have to seat it a little deeper than I did with my dummy round if using AI AICS mags as loaded, the OAL is too long or run as a single-shot. As far as an appropriate powder for this load, something slow burning. Not sure if the load will be compressed.
