Rem 700 223 tac. Need opinions

So I just got a Rem 700 223 tac. It obviously has the awesome hogue stock which I knew I’d change. I need some opinions.

1. Do I leave the drop floor plate with the new stock, or go bottom metal and magazine?

I’m building this as a semi budget build, but want to shoot it a bunch. So I’d like it to be right if you will.

I could go with a Magpul stock which is set up for mags. Looking for other opinions. Have glanced over the BC stocks some.

What’s the status of 223 AICS mags? Who makes the best ones, and where is the best place to buy?

Krg Bravo? Cheap, has bottom metal incorporated, comfortable. Id take it over a B&C any day.

I use Accurate 223 mags. Feed great and if you file out the front of the insert you get plenty of mag length to load heavier bullets.

You'll definetly want a detachable mag system if you plan to shoot a lot. Loading will get old quick with the stock bdl mag system. The magpul doesn't have a vertical grip and that makes it less comfortable. The KRG Bravo is a super great choice as @FUNCTIONAL stated.

I ditched the rubber stock and I got a used McMillan A3-5 and Surgeon bottom metal off the SH PH and I'm very happy with it.

Went with a manners ta and accurate mag myself. Ditch the trigger too, I’ve been happy with my trigger tech.
Mine shot alright with its factory barrel.

I have your rifle. I have a Rem 700 SPS Tac in .223 with the 20" barrel. I dropped it into a B&C Medalist stock, added a Timney 510 trigger and mounted a Vortex PST Gen. II scope on it. It will shoot 1/2 moa all day. I've shot it out to 300 yds. (longest range I've been to) and had a best group of 7/8" at that distance. I reload too and it really likes Hornady 68gr. and 75gr. BTHP's in its 1:9 twist barrel.

If you're looking for a DBM, you can't go wrong with a KRG Bravo stock and some MDT magazines. Let us know what you decide!

Read through the gun forums and you will find hardly anyone who has not changed it out. Hogue does offer an overmolded stock with a full length bedding block for $100 less than the B&C, but do you really want to trust a manufacturer who will sacrifice quality of a firearm component for a contract? The Hogue stocks with the full length aluminum internals are actually a pretty good value for a hunting set up that you want to keep on the light side and the standard version has been great on my 10/22 with a Tac-Sol barrel that weighs a little over 4 pounds scope and all.
That same stock without full length aluminum internals on a Rem700 with a heavy barrel not so great a decision but no one forces people to buy them either.

Would recommend dropping the barreled action into a Grayboe stock (take your pick of their options). Replacing the factory trigger with a TriggerTech primary/special would be nice as well. Shoot it a bunch, and see what kind of accuracy you can get with the factory barrel and some good hand loads.

I'd second the Bravo, very happy with mine. I'd also say try out an MDT poly 223 mag, have had no problems to date with mine. Good solid fit in the magwell and gives you a very comfortable OAL if you're reloading.

If you do decide you want DBM, by the time you get a B&C (which are nice from what I understand) and buy the bottom metal, you're basically at or well over the cost of the Bravo or similar chassis options.

If you can live with the current BDL with 3 internal rounds or single feed, you could probably save a few bucks. Only you know if it would be worth it to you. I'd have a hard time going back myself.

I saw this deal and almost went with it myself, ended up getting the Bravo which is great. But every time I see a Grayboe I tell myself I need another 700 just to have one of their stocks.

I had a hogue on an sps tactical 308 that I replaced with a bell and carlson. It shot 3/4 moa with the bell and carlson, and 3/4 moa with the hogue. Hogue flimsy though

I've got a Choate tactical polymer stock with badger bottom metal inlet on my 223AI. It's built like a tank and cost me $200. I use MDT mags. I guess I could have spent another $600 on a stock that does the same thing as the choate.

The trigger was swapped for a Timney 510 and a Bell & Carlson stock (no Bravo’s existed yet).

I probably shoot my 223 SPS more than any other gun, hand loads are cheap and my shoulder doesn’t hate me after 100 rounds through the gun in one sitting. First thing I did was get rid of the stock, that thing is so soft it will flex by just looking at it hard enough. Plenty of good deals on here, just keep your eye open, I went with the AICS but if KRG had their entry level stock available at the time then I would have gotten that. I bought a bunch on the ai plastic 223 mags, out of the 6 I have two opened up at the top after the first range trip and they wont feed, two still work good, and the last 2 are still in the plastic, too afraid to open them up, lol. I’ve got to contact them and see if I can swap them out. At least there are other mag options now. I don’t have any rusting issues with my 700 tact, even with the raw spiral bolt fluting (and a Badger knob install from LRI), it is an older gun though.


If your going to shoot this rifle a lot don’t skimp where it matters, get a good stock and scope base. I lucked out and got a good shooter right out of the box, just had to upgrade everything, lol! When the barrel is done I’m going to send it out to one of the vendors on here for an upgrade.

So an update: The gun shoots lights out! Worked up a couple of loads, and it shoots them both well. Problem.....put a geissele trigger in it. Feels awesome. Is wasn’t this way, so I haven’t effed anything up with my ass scratchers. But, the button by the trigger to release the bolt now has zero spring tension. You can pull the bolt out without pushing the button.

Bought it at Primary Arms, they are local.
Gonnna drop by this week. To guys got any ideas?

I’m performance time. First is a 50 grain v max with IMR 3031

The second is BLC-2 with a 52 grain baby match king.

Did you take the trigger apart. “Justin do you know what is 700 Remington looks like?“ Yes sir I know what they look like. Are you familiar with the button that releases the bolt? No. Can you put somebody on the phone that does? No. You can return it and we can look at it. I’ll tell you what Justin, I’ll just put a goddamn Timney in my gun and be done with it.

Maybe this is hot on the heels of me calling them for the two washers that go on the bolt for a rail. They were not in the box. You would’ve thought that I asked these people for the crown jewels. By the way I probably only own five or $6000 of G products. I’ve needed their customer service exactly twice, and they are absolute idiots.

I believe the spring tension comes from the Remington factory parts that interface with the piece that sticks out perpendicular (blue arrow).

Once is a fluke, twice is a pattern. I don't give many second chances. If the company is serious, they will make it right the first time. I would move on.
