REM 700 budget Weaver 20 MOA base, Weaver Tactical rings, and level

While putting together a range rifle Rem 700 range rifle, I know I wanted a 1 piece base, and being a low dollar “build”, it appeared the Weaver 20 moa sloped “multi slot” extended base was a bargain. It usually can be found for $40.00 or lower (bought this one on sale for $20.00).

The base is made of 6061 T6 aluminum, has 16 picatinny (.208”) sized slots that are spaced at .394” center to center, and is anodized in matte black. There are 4 Torx mounting screws, and it comes with a Torx wrench for installation.

You can see the built in “recoil lug” on the bottom of the base. The base wraps around the receiver via the recessed area, and the lip (recoil lug) bumps up againts the action’s ejection port to keep it locked into place.

After checking for fit, cleaning the top and mounting holes of the receiver and base of any residue, I used a drop Loctite on the mounting screws, and covered the bottom of the base with Loctite to keep everything tight and mating. Then I tightened the screws to Weaver’s suggested 15-20 in. lb torque spec and then wiped off any remaining Loctite from the seam of the base. The appearance of the mounting seemed off compared to the ejection port, I’d believe that the recoil lug of the base would create a bit offset look at the front, however on it had the same offset look at the rear too.

But other than that, the other surfaces seemed to be a great fit. Below shows the amount of room the extended base offers.

For rings, I had purchased a set of Weaver Tactical 30mm rings while they were on sale for $20.00 and figured they would be a decent addition. As the base gives a little height, I went with low profile height to offset the added height of the base.

I was a bit let down by the rings, although they had 6 screws and gave a semi “beefy” appearance; they really seemed not too much more of an upgrade over your basic off the Walmart shelf weaver rings. The cross bolt (ring to base mounting screw) didn’t ssem all that too much different / stronger. While mounting one of the rings to Weaver’s suggested 35-40 in lbs, a ring to base mounting screw (cross bolt) stripped out and snapped. I went back to the store and returned them for another set, the second set had a different style cross bolt nut, I don’t know if they changed them in a later production run. They also were the regular weaver sized cross bolt size, not picatinny sized, so they had to be “bumped up” against the ridges of the base – one in the forward direction, one in the backward direction to prevent movement under recoil. A drop of Loctite on each of the cross bolts. Ring caps torque specs are 10-15 in lbs. I probably should have got a different set of rings after the problem with the first set, but must say I haven’t had any issues with them since.

While there, I picked up a cheapie B-Square rail mounted rifle level, installation is pretty simple and clamps on much like the ring. Make sure to level the rifle first using a separate level, then install the rifle level, making sure to not move the rifle any and check the rifle level as you torque the mounting screw as it will soemtimes drift off level while tightening. Making sure the rifle is level will also help later to level your optic’s crosshairs. I chose to bump it up against a ring for a little more support / protection. It’ll also have to straddle and rest on 2 of the base’s ridges to prevent any wobbling.

So for the budget “build” for a base, rings and level = $50.00

After 400 rounds of .243, no issues / problems with the base, rings, or level.
