Ive got a older 700 chambered in -06 and the safety is ridiculously hard to take off safety. Its not as hard to put on but its still way harder than it should be. Ive cleaned and lubed it just about as good as i can without dissasembly but no luck. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks for the help guys

Re: rem 700 help

If oiling it doesn't help, then you may have something binding in there. There's a small detent ball that snaps between two holes in the trigger housing. A spring-steel plate applies tension to the ball and springs back as the ball moves between detents. The ball could be corroded or out of round, or it could just be gunk keeping it from moving freely.

Rifle Basix has a PDF on how to R&R the safety here:

Re: rem 700 help

On the old style triggers there's a lobe inside the trigger on the safety lever that pushes up the top lever of the trigger when engaged. If you're comfortable doing this remove the E-clip holding the safety lever and associated parts and pull the pin. Remove the safety and polish the top portion that makes contact with the top lever. Lube and reassemble. Should help a lot. If you don't want to remove the safety lever you can get to it from the rear of the trigger. Work just the slightest amount of bolt lube on the top. That should help also.
