Ok I decided to do a 6.5 MM build and I have a question about which action to use. Before I get the "Go Custom" response I know there are some great custom actions and for the price it's hard to beat compared to blueprinting a Rem action however my gunsmith is a good friend. He lets me help and doesn't charge me any labor. Plus I want to learn how it's done. My father was a tool and die maker and when I was younger I used to help out in the shop. He sold the equipment back in the 80's and passed away 5 years ago so doing this is bringing back memories times we shared together. So here is the question.

First off I'm an FFL and wholesale price on a new action from Brownells is $400.00 and most used actions or donor rifles I've found are running the same or more. So would I be better off ordering new or looking for something used and why? I know about avoiding J-Locks and for right now I'll be using the stock trigger(after a trigger job).

FWIW this will be for target shooting and maybe some comps. I'm a couple of hours from TVP and would love to bang some long range steel.

Still think used is better way to go.

You can find a nicer donor rifle used and then sell off the parts, such as barrel, bottom metal and stock and should be better off that paying $400 for an action alone

Not knowing exactly what you want......but being an FFL and assuming you have wholesale access somewhere, you can get an SPS complete rifle for just over $500.

Im guessing you could sell the factory tube, bottom metal, and trigger easy enough, the stock may be tough to move beings they're so cheap....maybe $30-40 if your lucky???

Re: Rem 700 Old vs New

I'd go with a used one. I just pick up a like new Remington 700 ADL in 243 for $320 shipped. Included Leupold scope mounts&rings plus a 3-9 Bushnell banner scope that's almost like new.
