Rem 700 sps tactical

Re: Rem 700 sps tactical

Depends on the caliber and the shooter. Are you talking point target or area target? If you are talking 308 with quality glass and ammo, a competent shooter can easily shoot man size targets out past 1,000 yards.

Re: Rem 700 sps tactical

Oh good point sorry for that specs are a .308 sps tatical with 20" barrel and the overmouded houge stock. I have the rife and Im wanting to set it up correctly and know my limits. I would love some suggestions on scope bases rings and the proper glass for a nice long range shot.

Everything you want to know, and more are available with some good reading time here. Just search out the "whats the best. . . . ." subject threads and you will find what you are lookin for. The best thing you can do is study up, and practice practice practice.

Re: Rem 700 sps tactical

Their are many forums for scopes and rings under optics. I would lose the hogue stock too. Watch under Optics and Accessories, about every week someone is posting an HS Precision for sale. You'll wand a BDL. Have a gunsmith bed it or you can read about how to do it yourself. I did and it is a pretty simple task. You'll probably be able to find a quality optic here too. Good luck and welcome.

Re: Rem 700 sps tactical

I have been running 175 smk's, 155 and 168 amax in mine. Hits out to 600 are easy, 7 and 8 hundred are fun, 900 and 1000 will teach you a few things...

1st upgrade, stock! One of the b&c stocks or hs precision are the cheep and effective ways to go.

Optics, super sniper will work good for little $ and good resale

Use a base with 20 or 30 moa built into it. EGW is cheap and works.

I run a monarch tactical 2.5-10x on a egw 30 HD and have more than enough room to make it to 1000. If I lose my place on the elevation dial I know my zero is 2 and 1/2 turns up from the bottom, a zero stop of sorts. Been thinking of switching out to a base to the badger 45moa to put me a little closer for convenience but that’s for a rainy day...

Ya, I am somewhat of a 308 whore. The tactical makes a fine rifle and fun too. I shoot it almost as much as my rock 21" barreled 308. Its size, weight and balance are near prefect. Its a little slow in muzzle velocity but proper bullets make it work out well.

Don't go into it with the mindset that the rifle will limit you. YOU will most likely be the weak link for quite a while. I was in your shoes about a year ago. Started with the basic SPS-T and budget optics and just shot it for a while from 100-500 yrds. Once I got MY proficiency up with lots of trigger time, I was surprised at how well the rifle would shoot. I slowly started upgrading the gun, 1st starting with a better stock. I bought an HS precison take-off from a local guy and that helped a lot. With the basic gun, budget optics (Falcon 5-25), cheap rings (Burris), etc and tuned reloads - I was able to shoot it fairly consistantly out to 1000 yds and get hits on a std chest size steel man. The max I've made hits so far is 1200 yds. That's nothing earth shattering in terms of accuracy, but my point is that the SPS-T will not limit you from getting WELL beyond 200-300 yds. I doubt you'll win many Tac matches with it, but the stick will do most anything you want it to.

The point is, you won't know your limits until you go try it it at increasingly longer ranges. I promise you the gun won't be your limiting factor for a while yet.

To answer your specific question on scope, bases, rings, etc..... I agree with Niles - start with the stock. Optics are a whole thread in themselves - but some of the good starter budget scopes seem to be: SS, Falcon, Vortex Viper (PSTs still appear to be etherware), etc. EGW and Burris XTR rings are probably the cheapest route to go and they worked OK for me. If I had to do it all over again, I would have spent just a little extra $$ and gone Seekins base and rings from the start.

If you re-load, I've found that 175SMKs are the magic bullet for me. 168 SMKs and 168 AMAXs are both VERY accurate out to 600 yds. I've shot the AMAXs to 900 very accurately, but they got squirrely at 1K. The 175s seem to be just the perfect all around bullet for my gun from 100-1000. The 178 AMAXs are a close 2nd. I've tried both the 155 Palmas and 155 Scenars and they both were TERRIBLE. I just don't think I could get them going fast enough to be able to take advantage of the lighter bullet. Others have had success with them, but the 155s just shot like ass in my gun.

The Nut Behind the Butt is nearly always the limiting factor.

Read and re-read posts by Niles Coyote and ReaperDriver.

Outfit yourself with what you can afford, and go shoot it.

Re: Rem 700 sps tactical

+1 to all 3 above. I put mine in AICS, put in an old style worked Remy trigger, NightForce 5.5x22, Nightforce rings and 20 moa base....
I run a TBAC 30-P suppressor on it, what a blast!! It's like shooting a .22lr, it is real easy to burn though lots of ammo &
It shoots better than me on most days.
...
I have a hard time looking though the Nikon on my hunting rifle after shooting with the Nightforce! Awesome glass...just my $.02
