Rem M700 Age

Acquired an old M700 from my Dad. Trying to figure out the year it was manufactured. From what I've found, I believe the letter on the barrel nearest the received indicates the month of May, but with no letter designation on the receiver, I'm a little stuck. Based on this pic, can anyone help?

Not an expert on date codes, but the SN would indicate a damn early rifle. I love the plum color bluing on the old Remington steel. I have an XP100 with an action that color
