I took an 870 in for a refinish job today. The owner wants me to install some accessories for him once it's coated, one of them being a mag extension. This one has the dimples in the mag tube and I've not messed with one before.

What is the best method to remove the dimples so the extension can be installed?

All I do is drill them out with a 1/4" bit, clean up the burrs - make sure you get them good, cold blue.

There are a few. Some simply drill them out. (BHP9 types faster then I do)

Myself I borrowed a special tool that was made just for this. It was a hardened and polished tapered steel pin that you would slide down the mag tube, and force past the dimples. The tapered pin would then force the dimples back out flush with the outside diameter of the tube.

Don't do much shotgun work so I never bothered to make myself one I just borrowed it.

You can also use a socket (from a socket wrench set) that just fits in the tube. The best size varies by brand, but just be sure you don't wedge it in there. Don't ask....
