Hello all! I did use search function with not much luck, so sorry ahead of time if I missed info already stated. OK, here is my question/thoughts.
I am thinking of getting a new rifle. I want it in .300 win mag. Reason ?, its just what I want to have. I already own a couple of .308s. The idea of a supercharged .308 just gets me excited. I am still very new and learning. My goals are accuracy first distance second. Its overkill for where I shoot now but I just want it.
The rifle will be a Remington 700. I just want to get thoughts about which one. I have a .308 5R already and freakin love it so I know I cant go wrong there. Its just that I already own a 5R and I'm open to variety if its equal in quality. The other two to consider , if I am thinking correctly would be a 700 P or 700 XCR Tactical Long Range. Any of these will end up with a DBM setup. Also planned on different stock for 5R or P but maybe not for XCR. Would have to find out if I liked it or not.
Thanks a lot to all of you ahead of time for all your thoughts and opinions. Sorry this was so long winded.

Re: remington 300 win mag

If you have a couple of 308s, have you thought about rebarreling one to another caliber? Depending on what you are going to use it for, a 260 rem or one of the short fat magnum rounds could be an option.

Then again, getting a new rifle is always fun lol, so no shame in just wanting one and getting it because of that. The 5r is definitely a nice rifle and I would not hesitate to snag one of those were I you.

Re: remington 300 win mag

A couple of years ago I had a Remington 700 in 300 Win. Mag. built out to a long range target rifle.

What I did was buy the cheapest version of the Remington 700 in this caliber, which was the POS SPS model, and throw everything away except the bare reciever. Had the gunsmith true the reciever and put it back togeather with a Kreiger barrel, Elite Iron muzzel brake, McMillan A-5 stock, Badger Ordance DBM, and a Jewell trigger. Also had the gunsmith bed the action in the stock. I put a +20 moa picatinny scope mount and a Premier Reticles 5-25X56mm scope on it with some Badger ordance scope rings. Damn thing puts holes in holes @ 100 yards and shoots sub moa @ 1000 when I don't screw up the shot.

First barrel lasted just over 1100 rounds before it was shot out and, as I understand it, that is in the range of normal barrel life for this caliber and the way I use it. New barrels are on the way. (this time I'll have a new spare on hand)

Don't know if this is the way you want to go but it works for me.

Now that being said, I'm having a 308 Win. / 260 Rem. switch barrel target rifle being built right now.

Edit: Need to add that this new build will be a Surgeons 591 reciever and in retrospect with the Remington 700 reciever I used for the 300 WM build that a aftermarket reciever would have ecomonically been a better way to go.
