Re: Remington .308 build

If you are on a limited budget, bushnell makes a 4200 tactical scope that is pretty nice for about $489. Bell and Carlson or HS precision are good alternates to stocks. As far as the barrel, take your pick. I would suggest a remington 'sendero' contour, I think its .885" at the muzzle (varmint contour). I prefer Mcmillan stocks and Nightforce or USO scopes but everyone has to start somewhere. Don't scimp on optics, buy once cry once! You will never regret buying a good scope!

How about a AICS 1.5 or 2.0? It comes with a DBM. It's a drop in tighten screws and you are GTG. However, you have to like the thumb hole stock. Some people don't care much for them. You can also send it to GAP and have them "tacti-cool" it and it will be a tack driver.

As for scopes, I have Nightforce and Leupold Mark IV. Prefer the Nightforce over Leupy.

Re: Remington .308 build

Tactical stock: HS Precision. Why, due to the alum block and an easy drop in of the receiver. No pillars and such to mess with.

Scope: SS10X or like. I have turret issues with my SS in the cold of Alaska but for the coin its hard to beat. Glass in on par with my VXII's. If I would have had the coin back then, I would have gone a different route, NF but I went from VXII on hunting sticks to precision game and no coin. You can fairly easily sell the SS when time to upgrade.

Swap out the trigger, I prefer RB because the shoe feels like the stock 700s with deep grooves but there are many triggers. I hated the XMark rounded slick shoe.

Shoot the barrel to learn while saving coin for ? you want. I have a feeling it will shoot better than you think.

If are new the game, it can become addicting and when I started I had no idea what I wanted. I went the way of learning to shoot what I had as I tricked out the 700, asked questions until I got a good idea of the direction I wanted to go.

Learn while having fun!

Re: Remington .308 build

yeah I just bought a nikon monarch scope, i need to sight it in, i was going to buy a barrel too but I bought an AR lower instead, im going to see how well i can shoot with it, if I need to I'll buy a match grade barrel and see where I can go from there, i thought about a heavy match barrel but if I'm just shooting coyote or deer, then do I need the heavy barrel or would that be overkill?

Re: Remington .308 build

If your main purpose for the gun is hunting then yes I would have to say it is overkill to go with a heavy barrel. The main reason being it is HEAVY and it will get old really fast luging that heavy thing around.
