Is it a heavy barrel or a sporter? How far do you plan on shooting with it? Hair trigger you say? How much hair?

I am a big fan of the 40x rifles, they will shoot with any thing! Yours proably is a 1-12 twist with the 2oz trigger. Is it a single shot or repeater? Is it in a wood stock and if so does the stock have an accessory rail under the forearm? If so its a 40XB Rangemaster. Or does the action say 40XBBR and have eighter a green or wood benchrest stock? Several years ago Remington went from the blued actions to a stainless action. The barrels are made in the custom shop and are button rifled and are of very high quality. I have owned a few 40x over the years and the all have shot VERY good. I would also say if its an older rifle it will have 2 screws in the end of the forearm that are angled, they are to apply pressure on the barrel, leave them backed off! Post some pics of the rifle. If you want more info email or call Remington's custom shop, they are very helpful. Enjoy that fine rifle you have there.

Surfsideperson, if there are 2 letters stamped next to eachother on the left side of the rear barrel, close to where it screws into the rec'r, tell me what they are and I can date that rifle for you.

I had a 40XC (7.62) years ago and it was a very solid rig. 24", 1-12" twist, consistant, very adjustable and fun to shoot. I've always wanted another one but haven't come across one at just the right price.

If you bought it right (your happy with the price) I say you're good to go. Don't expect super results with cheap ammo but if you have access to handloading you should be very happy with the results. I miss mine...............

This was it.

Great rifle for 'across the course' but might be stretching it at palma ranges of 800,900 and 1,000 yds. Need about 180-190 gr. bullet for the longer ranges as 168-173 gr. bullet may not be stable at the 'half mile' mark. Also 1-12 twist rate may not be enough for the heavier bullets at the longer ranges unless you can hand load and use larger capacity cases like Winchester. Then you might be able to get enough powder behind the bullet to drive it fast enough. This is especially true if the barrel has more than a few thousand rounds through it and they were mostly full as opposed to practice loads. A worn out barrel will give you a vertical string that may span the top and bottom of the '9' ring.

Nbprp, they use 155gr bullets in palma, hence the name 155 palma.

Agree with you 6brshooter that the 155 gr. bullet is used in 'The Palma Match'. My reference was to the ranges the original author was wanting to shoot at which were more in line with what would be encountered at a 'Palma Match' as opposed to 'Across the Course'. I did not get the impression that the author was going to compete at those ranges but rather just wanted to shoot at those ranges.

I would not suggest the author use anything but what is stipulated in the Highpower rules regarding bullet weights during any Highpower competition that he/she may or may not take part in.
