Remington 597 17HMR recall?

I know about the recall and I feel that it is total B.S. for me to return my rifle and only get $200 back. Not including all the accesories I got for it.

I just wanted to know if anyone has anymore info on why the recall on semi-auto 17HMRs happened and if anyone has/had any problems with the rifle/ammo?

I had one blow up on me while shooting prairie dogs one day. The magazine exploded all over the place and the bolt handle hit my buddy sitting about four feet away. I took it back to Gander and they returned it to Remington for me. They sent me a new model with the laminate stock and said it had something to do with the head space.

I don't recall what ammo I was using, but I don't believe it was Remmy brand.

I'll get around to sending mine back someday. $200 is a friggin joke though.

As you can see from the recall notice, the ammunition mfg has stated the ammo is neither intended for nor safe in semiauto (blowback) systems.
The fact that Ruger announced and catalogued a .17HM2 auto , but never actually shipped any should be instructive. It's apparently not too difficult to get Mach 2 to run reasonably well (a fair number are around), but even .22WMR was beyond Ruger's ability to market successfully. There's a school of thought that Ruger withdrew the 10/22Mag in part BECAUSE people were converting them to HMR with resulting slamfires or other OOB discharges, blown bolts, etc.
I agree, Remington ought to refund the purchase price, not their cost. Seems short-sighted in a business sense, if nothing else, though there's lots else.
