+1 for this load.
I was just about to post the same specs.
I use 43.5gr varget in the summer, need to work another load when it gets colder.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I am in the process of working up a load for 175's. 43.5 seemed to be most accurate in the string that I shot this past weekend.
I did load up more test ammo 43.6,43.7.43.8,43.9 just to see if I can get a little more speed and still have accuracy.
From that Point I will fool with seating depth a little.

175 SMK
43.5 grains Varget
RP brass FL sized
CCI standard large rifle primer
light crimp (Lee)
2.820 COAL

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Winchester case,
remington 9 1/2 primer or wolf std.
44.3 Reloder 15
175 sierra

.3MOA @300yds.

If you have the surplus "long range match powder" use 43.5 and it is a match for M118LR from 05-07.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

168 amax
43.8 varget
wlr primer
2.800
hornady match brass

175 smk
43.5 varget
wlr primer
2.800
hornady match brass

168 smk
43.6 varget
wlr primer
2.800
hornady match brass

The 175 smk and 168 amax is the best of the three. The amax being the best....I would have never guessed it since the are designed for the 175. I am taking the 168 amax's deer hunting this year.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I'm looking for loads for this rifle as well. So far testing several factory loads, the 5R seems to like 168 &175 grain loads. The 175 FGM shoot awesome, but I need to do more testing. I only had one box of the 175 FGM. Groups were 3/8"@100 yards and 3"@500 yards. I just tried the 168 FGM & Hornady 168 TAP, both shot 5 groups at 1/2" @100 yards. The FGM chronographed at 2712 fps from the stock 5R @ 59 degrees. The TAP actually shot @ 2650 the same day & time.

Here are a few pictures. Don't have any with the 175's.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Hmmm....I am running:

175 SMK
45 Varget
FGMM brass
CCI BR2s

Fed brass must have more capacity or I am running a little more pressure than you guys...shoots the lights out in my 5r though.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I reckon my 5r likes lighter loads. I cant get great accuracy over 42.5 grs. I have tried both Varget and H4895 and both shoot like a dream at 42.5 but really no where else. Winchester brass, Federal match primers, 2.810 OAL with 175 SMKs

Amen to that. My 700 shoots like a dream from 42grn to 42.5....but if you even get near 43 or above, the groups open up dramatically.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Same here with the Amax. 42.5 gets a great group.

here are some photos

Not sure how to post a pic. if someone could help that would be neat. links should work tho.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

The_AKD,
Thanks for sharing the info on your ladder test. I have read about them before but your 500M target really shows where you should be developing your load.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Thx Scott. I know some people do load testing at 100m but to me its counter productive. not only are you using 5x as much ammo but human error can give you false info really easy @ 100. 500+ is much more forgiving.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

My buddy just bought a 5R too. We tried my 42.5 loads in it as well and it drives tacks with it. We have not tested any loads other than that. I think alot of those 5r's may like that 42.5 grs of Varget or H4895.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Hey Doc, are your 168 rounds touching the lands or do you bring them a little off? I dont have any 168 amax at home to compare to the 178 but im just wondering how close our throats are.

Also do u find a big difference with primers in varget powder? Im just not sure how fast varget burns. I heard the 250's were one of the hotter ones but its interesting how you have a load that you think about the BR=2 big on.

DSC00549.jpg

Lets try this..
Its 168gr SMK with 40 gr of IMR 4895. Im sure there must have been a little wind to push them all like that, its definitely not the norm for me, but the best group yet

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Thanks for the info gentleman (ladies?)! I've been looking at getting a 5R and this will save me a bunch of time and coin at the range.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Anyone try IMR 8208 XBR in their loads?
I am working on it next, going to compare to Reloder15 and H4895... temp conditions is what I am wanting to test.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

168 smk
42.5 varget
win case
cci 200
oal 2.800

tack driver in the 5r. i also had the groups open up when i tried to go hotter. ive been playing with some benchmark and i can get close to the varget groups but not out doing it. 42 grains is the best i could come up with.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

44.9 gn varget
175smk
Win brass trimmed to 2.005
BR2 primers
.015 off the lands. ( ogive 2.330 )

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

For my 5r, my 1k load is 44.1gr varget in 1-5x fired fed brass sized .003 back, trimmed to 2.007, .002-.003 neck tension, with a smk175 seated by ogive, oal ends up around 2.818 (? Just barely mag length) Wolf primer. ~2650 iirc, 1k dope is about 10.3 mil from a 200 yd zero.

It is now time to test a new lot of powder, but that's what I loaded for my girlfriend to compete with for the past 15 months or so.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

my 5-R load:
175 SMK
45.5 RL-15
Rem 9-1/2 LR primers
about 2675fps

Currently I've been working up a load of the same specs except around the 48.0 gn range and have gotten good results so far and no any real pressure signs, 2775fps range.
This is a pretty hot load so work up slowly.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I have had good luck with 43.5 RL15 with 1698 Berger VLD or 168 SMK's. The 180 SMK and 175 SMK like 42.5grn RL 15. I have not tried Varget but I know people who have good luck with it. Sounds like you cant go wrong with either, just pick one that is the most available to you.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

today i finally had two 1/2 inch groups at 100 yd with my 5r

using

Hornady 168 bthp
hornady match brass 1x fired
coal 2.810 // hor comparator reading, 2.230
44.6 g of Varget
CCI 200

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

Winchester case
CCI BR primer
44.1gr Varget
175 SMK
2.81 OAL

Scary accurate in my 5R and a GAP M24 clone.

yes, it outshot varget in my 5r. I now use it in three calibers.( 223, 6x47, 308)

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

175SMK, 44.8gr Varget, F210M, Lapua brass, 2.820" COAL with trimmed meplats, barely fits my magazine. Shoots about .4 MOA in my 5R. Looks like RL15 is worth a try as well.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

subed for info on my 5r! so far i have only shot the fed gold medal 175gr match kings and they shoot very well!

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I'm getting started, with my 5R. It's still a work in progress. So far, a "nice" light load, is 37.3 Viht-135, behind a 168 Sierra BTHP Match. COL-2.8010 The cases are real easy to reload. Hardly any sizing required. Punches 1/2 in. groups, at 100. Also "found" a box of old 125 gr. Spitzers, in a drawer. Using H4895, 46.6gr., with a COL of 2.7, They're giving me 1/2 to 3/4 in groups, out of the first lot of 20. Working with Varget, now. Just started loading for an OCW test, as suggested by others on this site. Will post results. Most of my shooting is 100 yds., for convenience. The 600 yd range is an hour and a half drive. Life on the East coast. Not alot of "open ground" left.

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

For the 175's...44gr Varget..2.80..WLR Primer
.
For the 168's...45.5gr Varget..2.80..WLR Primer
.
.
Use the 168s mainly, killed some pdog's with'm last summer *168 Nosler CC and Throw 168Amax in for deer. Sorry I dont have any group photos handy but they shoot. Also shot the 168 load out of a sps varmint I picked up used an it loves that load as well. Good luck an welcome to the club.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: TiDavis</div><div class="ubbcode-body">What do your most accurate loads consist of? Working on a 175 SMK load now. </div></div>
168g AMAXs over enough IMR4895 to get out the tube of my 5R/AICS rifle at 2,730fps. This load also happens to be the OBT for a 24" tube and remains supersonic past 1,000 yards. I have hit 4" targets cold bore at just over 900 yards with this load in my 5R/AICS rifle. No problems hitting small targets well past 1,000 yards if the conditions are good with this load.

175g SMKs do not seem quite as consistent as the 168g AMAXs but may be a touch better in the wind. I have to drive the rifle with the 175g SMK load very carefully to match the performance of the 168g AMAX load which seems to just find the target naturally. My best 175g SMK loads seem to be sort of marginal for pressure in my 5R/AICS rifle but do work well past 1,000 yards. For the 175g SMKs I load them up using RL17 to 2,690fps. All velocities were tested through a PVM21 chrono.

HTH!

Re: Remington 5R in 308.....accurate loads

I picked up a new 5R yesterday and got a little range time today. These are the first five rounds fired from the new rifle. I cleaned the barrel between each shot. So far I am extremely impressed with this rifle.
