I’ve been using Remington 7.5 primers for 223 and 223AI for probably 20 years now and always had very good luck with them in terms of reliability, cup toughness and SD/ES/accuracy.

Went to load more 223AI this weekend and opened the last 1000 count box out of the case of 7.5s on the shelf, and thought I had another case of 5000 7.5s left behind that case… turns out I don’t.

Before I order more 7.5s, I started thinking… I have a ton of CCI 450s on the shelf that I use for 22BR/22GT/6 Dasher. I’ve done some reading and it looks like the Remington 7.5 and CCI 450 are fairly equivalent in terms of cup thickness/toughness, with the 450 maybe being a bit hotter burning than the 7.5.

Has anyone done back to back testing between 7.5s and 450s in 223 or 223AI, and did it make any appreciable differences in your loads? I’m debating between ordering a couple more cases of 7.5s just to keep things consistent with my already developed 223 & 223AI loads, or just consolidating my primer inventory and switching my 223s & 223AIs over to CCI 450s and then possibly working up new loads.

I also have a ton of Wolf KVB556M primers which I know work very well in 223/223AI, so maybe I’ll switch to the Wolf primers in the short term for 223/223AI, and then revisit the 7.5 vs 450 decision when I run out of the Wolf primers since they are no longer available.

Thanks for any info…

Never done any back to back (and likely wont with only one tray of 7 1/2s Ive been holding onto for some reason) but they should be fairly comparable. The 6 1/2 is like the 400.

I have done back to back with straight .223 , and see very little difference if any . This has been the case in at least 3 rifles, Tikka Varmint,Rem 700 varmint, and custom benchrest rig .POI and speed are very close . You will have very little load work to do when you switch to the 450s .

Remington 6 1/2 are for low pressure loads like 22 hornet and not recommended for stuff like 223 high pressure. They are perfect for the 17 Hornet. I get the best on target results.

To the OP, i have tested BR4 vs 450 as i have read that the 450’s are better for SD. I did 25 of the BR4 and 25 of the 450 with exact same load. Yes the 450’s had lower SD but the BR4’s had a 5x5 smaller group average. Now maybe if i did a full workup of a load the 450’s might be better in smaller groups but i am not convinced.

As the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

nobody knows how your LOT of rem 7.5 or your LOT of cci 450 or your LOT of wolf will operate in you rifle, so...

but usualy everybody want to have murom/wolf SRM or cci 450 primers, not shity remington, so...!?

I've did a load work up in my 223AI using both Varget and Re15, 450/7.5/Wolf SRM, and Berger 80.5's and 80 VLD's. The edge went to the 450's with the Wolf SRM being very close in accuracy. The numbers were pretty much interchangeable. The 7.5 loads did shoot well but not as good as the other two.

I think I have maybe 40k CCI 450's.
That's all I have ever used in my 223 Ackley and I can honestly tell you that I have never had any problems. I use 80 gr Berger VLD's and can shoot real small groups at 100 and hit targets a real long ways away.
