I just purchased a Remington stock and barrel. The barrel is for a 22-250. I am looking for a used action but before I purchase one, will any Remington short action 700 work? What will need to be done to make the new action work?

I'm in the same boat as you about the question. I have a .243 action that I want to put a new barrel on. Can I just put any short action caliber barrel on it?

Re: Remington 700 22-250 action

Short actions are used for many different calibers of many different sizes.
I strongly suggest talking to a reputable gunsmith before going a buying parts, barrels, etc. if you must ask these types of questions.

Will they have to do anything to the bolt face? I bought the stock and barrel from a guy who bought the gun for the action so it is just a stock set up, nothing fancy.

Re: Remington 700 22-250 action

You shouldn't have to do anythign to the BF. You only have 3 main options for a factory BF:.384, .473 & .540". There are also the safari and big bores with the .585 BF. Everythin depends upon what you want to build. The standard short action for a .243/.308/.22-250 etc will allow you to build a myriad of standard and wild cat calibers. Both Kellano and HuntermanPaul have a .473 BF action, from the sounds of it. If I was going to build on those actions, it would be either a .260 or .308.

Just get in touch witha good smith and he will lead you through the process of building what you want.

You are going to end up having more money in this project than just buying a new, off the shelf R700 in 22-250. I would sell the shit you have and go to the closest gunshop and buy a R700 SPS Varmint chambered in 22-250. Hopefully the guy you bought it from didnt play on your ignorance to the situation and charge you an exorbitant amount of money for the factory take off barrel and stock.

Re: Remington 700 22-250 action

A used SA Rem 700 without any work done to it goes for around 350, I bought a whole 22-250 from dicks on sale for $350. It is just a SPS Varmint so its the cheap stock. I know they make some nicer 22-250's with the HS stock. So it depends on what you have if it is worth screwing that barrel onto a new action. It is also very hard to find new actions right now.
