Just recently purchased this rifle and trying to gather what info I can before I start dropping more money. Planning on having the rifle blueprinted and threaded for a brake as soon as it is in hand. Other than that will probably shoot it with the HS Precision stock until i decide to drop coin for a chassis. Would like to dabble in PRS a bit but until then I have local access to a 1600yd range so I want to get familiar with the gun past 1000.
-I've heard pretty good things about the 5r barrel, anyone here have any firsthand experience? Will probably shoot the 5r barrel for awhile then swap to 300PRC
-Would love to have some load data for this thing so I can start ordering components.
-Any recommendations on a chassis system? Leaning toward the AICS purely on looks lol but open to any other recommendations.
-Any other general suggestions as to things I may need to consider. Never owned a R700 so not sure what I should be watching for or planning for when turning this into a long range gun.

Shoot it first without truing. True it whenever you swap barrels.

Probably not the best option for PRS style matches. Too big of a cartridge and too much recoil. Not saying it cant be done, just not practical at all.

Overall, it should be a great rifle. She looks great too, nice snag!

Do R700s usually have pretty good accuracy out of the box without being trued?

Thanks, can't wait to get her to the range.

I and two friends have 308 5r's from a few years back and they are all shooters. There seems to be some better than others, but definitely try it.

Remington rifles are a hit or miss type of rifle. They have a reputation for very poor quality control and lemons are very very common. Truing the action will not gain you much in the accuracy department. It is the barrel that plays the biggest role there. However, it is to my understanding that the 5R models are made to better and higher quality than the non 5R rifles. However, don't quote me on that as I do not own a Remington rifle, this is purely from what I have seen and heard. Anyhow, I'll repeat what I said about 5R models being more accurate and just better. I would like to assume yours should shoot decent. Be sure to try different types of factory ammo so you figure out what it likes best.

Don’t bother truing your action. It won’t accomplish anything. Shoot it as is and when you rebarrel it, skip the truing then as well. Remington 5Rs shoot great.

I have plenty of years shooting and watching others shoot remington rifles and the 5R is hands down one of the best shooting rifles Remington puts out. With that being said I don’t work for remington or get kick backs from them. Hell I have not bought a Remington in probably 8-10 years and most likely won’t buy another just because I’ve transitioned into some higher quality stuff that I prefer. All that said, if I bough a Remington a 5R would be top of the list.

I had an older 5R in .308. I got some decent groups with the 175 SMK, but the rifle was an absolute hammer with 155gr match kings...consistently between .3 and .4 MOA. Like an idiot who couldn't leave well enough alone I rebarreled the rifle into a .260 and put it in a Manners T4, then eventually sold it.

If you skim bed the stock and replace the Trigger, you shouldn't have to do much else aside from load development/factory ammo testing.

The worst part for me was the ergonomics of the H-S stock. Some like it, many don't. It's a personal preference thing. However if you already plan on adding a chassis then you won't be disappointed for long.

I don’t bed any rifle in any stock from Manners to plastic tikka factory stocks. I have yet to see the need. I am sure many will disagree but I see bedding stocks the same as bedding scope bases and truing actions. Waste of time and money. I am not chasing the .1 moa accuracy increase that these things may theoretically unlock. I don't enjoy shooting groups either as many do and at distance, wind is the factor not the difference between a .5” or .7” rifle and ammo combination.

I just shoot for fun out to the 900 yards that is available to me and factory ammunition with non bedded stocks never held me back. Heck my factory Tikka ctr with 140gr american gunner at 70 cents a round is a hammer at that distance. My factory 20” .308 was as well although a little tougher making consecutive hits when the wind is up and down ?

It comes down to personally preference as always. Do what you like of course. ?

I have a Gen2 5R, the one with the barrel flutes. First three shots are always tight, sometimes touching. Next few shots in a group start opening up, pretty sure because of the heat.

Mine is bedded, Timney Elite 2 stage, Wyatt's DBM, Muzzle Brakes and More four port brake, M16 extractor (factory one failed after 180 rounds)...

Shooting 5/8" groups using 208 ELDM 20 thousandth off the lands, 75g H1000, Federal primers, Hornady brass. Haven't measured speed yet, as I'm probably ditching the brass and ordering some Lapua or Norma, so, starting over essentially.

Try 190 FGMM and see how it shoots before you start messing with it. Double up on ear protection, especially with a brake.

Mike at TACOPS suggests running the action screws at 65 rear, 70 up front. Calls it his 1/4" MOA secret. YMMV.

Hope that helps, good luck with it.

My 5R Gen1 308 is a tack driver with 175 SMK , 43 gr. Varget, fire formed neck sized LC brass. I added a Timney Calvin elite trigger tuned to 9 ounce pull , went to a KRG Bravo stock. Vortex Gen2 5x25 PST. Shoots one hole groups. You will love your Gen 1 5R . I went 308 for reloading affordability and component availability. Bought same rifle for my son , 20 serial numbers apart. Same upgrades except kept the H&S stock, bedded it, Timney 510 trigger . Shoots the same. Chambers are the same. We can shoot the same brass just neck sized only. They are great rifles for the money. And you can do the upgrades yourself. Shoot it With the factory barreled action and spend your coin on a trigger and optics. Bed the H&S and you'll have a great shooter.
