Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

I have a Remington 700 SPS tactical that I am currently working with to try and get the most accuracy and precision possible with out having to go custom. It shoots sub MOA and I have not done anything to it other than removing the Hogue stock and replacing it with a 5R stock. My next step is Truing the Action and Bedding the rifle. I was wondering what a Truing job should run and whether or not this should be done prior the bedding the action(Which is probably a dumb question)?

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

Most places will charge around 250 or so to true an action. In my experience I have never gained accuracy when bedding a hs, that block they have in there seems to work pretty well. Also, do you reload?

Truing an action $250. Setting your bbl back .0001 another $250 to $300. Bedding your rifles, by a smith, another $250. Adjusting your trigger to 2.5 lbs $35.

If your rifle shoots well just get it bed and adjust the trigger. Then shoot the bbl out. After the bbl is shot out true the action and get a new bbl. JMO

Thanks...I didnt think about waiting till the factory barrel wears out. You have a point.

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

If it is running sub MOA, then you are doing better than most off the shelf rifles. I doubt you will get much more with the factory barrel, you're probably close to achieving the max with what you've got.

The only three things I would do at this point:

* adjust the trigger
* tune your loads for accuracy
* skim bed the stock- it's easy, get some Devcon and have at it. No need to pay a lot to have it done.

Oh, and practice. That will make far more difference than the parts of the gun.

+1
I wouldn't waste a dime messing with truing the action as long as the factory barrel is on it or fine tuning a factory barrel. To me it's only worth the money for a good hand lapped barrel. After all Remington has about $50 at most in a factory barrel. You can't make a 1hole gun out of a .5-.75" barrel no matter how much you spend on it.

If it's shooting fine, stick it out till it's toast or just ditch the $50 pipe and go custom and get the action worked over and have everything bedded and so forth.

How many rounds do you have through the gun?
How does it shoot?
Can you outshoot the rifle?

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

Like others are saying, don't true the action unless you are going to rebarrel it. I would bed the action. I have seen it help in the hs precision stocks. If nothing else it will help better center the barrrel in the barrel channel and insure that it stays free floated.

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

My local 700 gunsmith charges $250 to true the action. I'm going to wait till my 700P .338 stock barrel is toast then have it done with a custom barrel like a Krieger.

Right now the gun is less that .5" MOA, so I have nothing to complain about the action and/or barrel.

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

It will cost in the neighborhood of 650 to 700 dollars. That is for truing the action and bolt, installing and chambering a match grade barrel (barrel cost is included)

Re: Remington 700 Action Truing Cost?

In my opinion, your next step should be to replace the Factory trigger, that will yield the most accuracy improvement for the least amount of money. A good trigger will hold its value even if you decide to change directions.
Heck, I don't even own a Remmy and I have a Jewell trigger group in my gunsafe, for the day I pick up another rifle.
Good luck on your decision.
