Hi all. I just bought a Remington 700 SPS tactical and am very excited to have it, although I am worried about some wear on the bolt that I noticed. I am worried this is going to have an effect on accuracy and that there is a problem. Please take a look at these photos and let me know if any of these things look problematic.

I am most worried about the dent along the edge of the protruding part of the bolt in the first and second images.

Since I haven't shot it, I can still take it back, but it would be a 10% restocking fee and I don't mind it as long as it isn't a problem. Please take a look and thank you!

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

I don't see anything abnormal. What I see is a mass production firearm with some machining marks but nothing that would have a bad effect on the function of the firearm.

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

Same here, you could take a fine stone to it and take a very little off. Put some lub on it and dry cycle it.

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

Thanks guys. That is reassuring. Even the dent on the ridge looks okay? Why did that happen? I think it happened with time as I worked the bolt once I got it. Is it supposed to do that? Is it possible that can damage the receiver in some way? The bolt is replaceable (though I hope I never have to), the receiver not as easily.

I just want a really accurate gun so that once I train up to it with my .22, I can shoot sub moa groups with a good scope.

You'll be fine, just shoot it.

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

Will do! Thanks! Now all I have to do is find some ammo. Places are getting sold out of everything very fast due to the gun scare. Even of .308. Any recommendations for some decent .308 for the money? I don't want to spend $35 dollars a box quite yet seeing as I don't think I can use it to its potential.

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

the "dent" looks like the rivet for the extractor that would be used on mag bolt face bolts. non the less, nothing abnormal looking that I can see

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

The dent I saw was on the edge of the lug, looked like it took a hard lick. If it didn't push up any metal then not a problem. Even a little push up could be dressed off with a fine stone.

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

Yes, I was referring to the edge of the lug. It is as though the edge had been flattened. What do you mean by push up any metal? What do you think caused it. Everyone seems to have said that it isn't a problem by now, but why did it happen in the first place? Is there some extra protruding metal in the receiver or something like that? I checked and it seems fine. I am assuming this is normal break in at this point. Is that correct?

Re: Remington 700 Bolt Wear on New Bolt?

For ammo if your looking for accuracy check out Federal Gold Medal Match 168SMK. Not going to break your bank as I believe the shops around me have it for 20-23 bucks. I've also had very good luck with the Black Hills red box 168HPBT and I think that is close in cost maybe a dollar or two more.

Good luck.
