My Remington 700 sps tactical is acting up on me. I was going to sight in my rifle for the first time when I went to remove my bolt and it wont come out. I am depressing the bolt stop button undermeath the rifle and the bolt will not come out. Is there something wrong. Is it worth it for me to contact Remington about this problem. Or is this something easy to fix.
Please help out a newbie.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Did you just mount a scope base?
If so, you may have the scope base screws reversed and it locked the bolt (long in the back & short in the front)
The front screw on your bottom metal will lock up the bolt if it is too long.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Yup. There is something wrong.
How much will the bolt release move when you try to actuate it?
Try actuating while looking at the rear of the action and you should see the arm that the release pushes move if it is working properly.
It will be inside the left side of the action if you look from the rear.
May not be making sense here and you may need a light to see what I am talking about.

So your able to move your bolt, you just can't get the bolt out of the action because the bolt release?

Or am i miss interpreting? If i'm not, My 5R has the same problem but it's just due to the bolt release sticking, and i have to kind of wiggle the bolt to get it out.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Bolt will move. The bolt cannot be remove from the action. I have tried messing with the bolt stop but the bolt wont come out. Is there another way to remove the bolt from the action?

Is the bolt release stuck? Or are you able to push it down and it just not work? I sometimes find i push it down and it will stick and i wiggle it back out into place then push it again. If none of that works i would take it to a smith.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Press the bolt stop down with a small flat screw driver. This isn't the button on the bottom of the trigger. This is the thin bar on the left side of your action when looking at it from the shooting position. Knowing what the bolt stop is, just figure out why its not moving down as far as it should. If it still wont come out take the action out of the stock and see if the bolt stop is hitting on the stock somewhere.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

When you push the bolt release in does it move freely?
The release needs to move freely in order to release the bolt.
You may have to remove the action and clean the bolt release if it's not fully free.

Will I have to re-torque the action to the stock? I don't have a torque wrench.

For this operation you will not remove the action.
Turn the rifle upside down and look at the bolt stop that Seekins is referring to. Then push down on that lever he is talking about.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

The bolt release is inside the trigger housing, in front of the trigger. It's a flat little lever that needs to be pushed in to release the bolt.
It should work freely, push it in and remove the bolt at the same time.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Get a flashlight. Open your bolt and pull it back all the way. Now look down the left side of your bolt in the lug raceway. The bolt stop sticking up on the left side about 1/2" or so in, is what you need to depress with a small flatbladed screw driver.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

The bolt stop is on the left side of the raceway, push it down with something.

Got it guys. Bolt is out. It seems the bolt stop does not travel down enough for the bolt to come out. Can I remove the bolt this way from now on, or should I contact a gunsmith to fix this.
thanks guys for your help.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

When you press the square button at the bottom it is connected to a spring that pushes the bolt stop down. If it gets gunked up sometimes it wont create enough spring tension to move the bolt stop down all the way. Spray it with lighter fluid and see if it starts working. I'd guess it has packing grease in there being so new.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Could be an easy fix.

The bolt stop spring mechanism is in the same housing as the trigger. Have a look at it and perhaps you will notice something out of place ?

Have a look at the Timney triggers Remington 700 trigger with safety installation guide. You can find it as a PDF online. It has pictures of how to reinstall a bolt stop/release mechanism along with a little description. It might give you some indication of whats going on.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

So is this bolt stop only for stoping the bolt from coming out. So in other words there is nothing wrong with me having to remove the bolt without the bolt stop button underneath the rifle, right. Will try to fix it myself, but if I cant I will have to wait for a gunsmith.
Thanks,for all the help.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

Although it's no problem to just remove the bolt the way you are, which is the way you have to do it on something like an XP-100, it's not exactly convenient.

The bolt stop is in direct contact with the button under the trigger group (it's not the spring that moves it as was said above). The button is part of a one piece stamping that rides on two pins in the trigger group. My guess would be that the stamping got bent a little out of shape where it contacts the bolt stop. It would be an easy fix, you'd just have to pull the action from the stock and bend it with some pliers until it worked correctly.

Before you do that though, you are pressing the button before the bolt has reached the stop, correct? If you're pulling the bolt rearward into the stop while pushing the button, there will be too much friction to overcome with the release button.

Re: Remington 700 bolt will not come out.

I had the exact same problem with my Pss when I first got it. It turned out that the bolt stop was jammed. I only found this out when I removed the action from the stock. It was jammed up pretty hard as I recall and had to use a small screw driver to get it to move. Lubed it an no problem since then.
Yes you will have to retorque the stock bolts. IIRC it required 35 or 40 inch pounds. I could be wrong it was 10 years ago.
