Had a friend reach out to me wanting to sell a rifle he's got, a Remington 700 PSS in .308, said he wants to try out 6.5cm instead, I didn't ask why. Anyone know much about these rifles? I tried doing a little bit of google-fu but couldn't come up with a whole lot of info specific to the platform. He's gonna get me some pictures tomorrow of the setup as well as barrel markings but he said it's a full factory rifle minus a drop-in Timney trigger and it's got NF rings with a cheap-ish Vortex scope all for $500.

What can y'all tell me about the PSS sub-model?

Depends on the era some were 5R barrels.

Good price. R700 with a Varmint barrel. They’re good shooters. Typically do for twice that without a scope. It’s a good buy

first r700 I ever owned was a R700 BDL VS (varmint synthetic) a grabbed for $400. basically the same rifle with a 22” barrel. Shot lights out with hand loads ie .3-.4’s.

I don't necessarily need it but for the price I don't see the harm in picking it up. He says there's about 150rds through it and he was shooting golf balls at 200yrds so approx. .75moa give or take.

Do it

That's less than I paid for mine in like the late 90s. Hell of a deal if not broken or anything I tend to say.

PSS probably means Police Special Sniper (or similar), but "sniper" is scary so Remington denied that, only referred to it by the TLA. Changed the name to the "P" later, claimed that stood for "Parkerized" not Police. No one believes them.

Normal 700 SA with a releasable floorplate, in a perfectly serviceable palm-swelled HS Precision stock. Or, drop into the zillions of options for other stocks and chassis. Mine — and most AFAIK — were mated with heavy 26" 5R barrels. Mine will do 1/2 MOA all day with good factory ammo, and 1/4 if you handload for it. Shoots everything well, but especially 168 and 175s. I've hit (lately) at 1100 yds with the 175s. I know it'll do 1400 someday; half a dozen shots right inline, but never /quite/ could chase the horrible, variable wind that day!

Barrel is stiff enough I get +/- no deviation with a Magnetospeed, or a suppressor (comes plain, I had it spun off and threaded), or both! Trigger will probably be one that kills you, so change it, which also will make it easier to shoot to the potential.

Parkerized bolt is not super smooth from the factory. Shoot it a few hundred times and it'll smooth out, if he hasn't already shot it plenty.

"Police Sharp Shooter" or "Police Sharpshooter Special" in the late 1980's

I'd heard those also, but never seen it written out and a thread... somewhere, once, had some Remington nerds dig into it and say they had no documentary evidence. Have you seen these as official in Rem marketing documents etc? If so, I'll remember that for the future.

Had one in 300BO with a 5R barrel. Wish I would have kept it and sold the AR blackout. Decent shooting gun for what they are

Well after looking at the pictures my buddy sent me I'm starting to fear that it is not in fact a PSS but a 700 SPS Tactical based on the "tactical" engraving on the side of the barrel by the caliber marking and a date code that puts it's build date in 2012. What do yall think?

^Agree. I guess the action and Timney are worth 500, but I'd pass.

Thats not even an HS stock, that is a Houge stock. Nothing about that rifle is 700PSS. For me i would rather have an action. I don't know what Remington action are going for right now.

not a PSS. But it doesnt sound like too bad of a deal anyways. Id buy it just for the hell of it.

While I have heard many state that 700 P stands for "700 Parkerized" over the years, I have never seen a box marked "700 P". All of the ones I have seen in the wild, (including the 2 I have at home circa late 90's/early 2000's) are marked "700 Police" on the box spelled out. They are indeed parkerized of course, however Remington certainly did sell them as a "700 Police".

As far as the earlier PSS name, I have heard many different explanations for the acronym. Police Sniper Synthetic, Police Sharp Shooter, Police Special Synthetic, etc. No documentation as to the actual full name though. If I recall the boxes just said "700 PSS" with as you said, no documentation from Remington as to the meaning.

I still have my 308 PSS, I don't think I'd ever sell it.
I remember buying it in a group purchase, $600 new, wished I could remember what date...

Definitely not a 700PSS, but those SPS Tactical rifles, especially the G prefix ones are generally excellent shooters, even in the flexy hogue stocks. I have one that has been great (throughout its life in the hogue stock, to a MPA chassis currently). It most likely has a 12 twist. Mine favors 168 over 175 grainers.

That rifle plus rings and scope at 500 is a reasonable price. Id personally offer 450.

$500 is a bit much but not unreasonable. You won’t loose any money on it but it’s not a pss

UPDATE:

Got the rifle today, everything seems to be pretty good on it, slight surface rust on/around the recoil lug, nothing that couldn't be cleaned off too easily. As for the parts I've identified on it so far:

Vortex Crossfire ii 6-24x50 scope
Nightforce X-treme 20moa single piece rail
Nightforce 30mm 1.125" rings

I haven't been able to figure out which model of Timney trigger is in there, maybe a 517?

None the less, it seems to be a decent setup. Haven't decided if I wanna put a little bit of money into it, shoot it, and release it into the wild, or just try to flip it locally.

Mine will cover a dime at 200 yards all day long. 168 Amax and Varget powder. I put it in a XLR chassis and added a Trigger Tech Diamond.

change the stock out and crack on. I'm sure you can find something nice for it in the PX. All the G prefix actions I've had or felt have been good quality .
Yea I've been keeping an eye on there for a nice stock or chassis, something in the $400 range.

I will keep mine, its a great shooter, and the action is smoothe. If i wear out the barrel, i will probably screw on a criterion remage and keep on rolling.

168s and varget or IMR4064 is the ticket in mine.

I wouldn't mind keeping it however I've already got a R700 LTR built up that fills the role. I may try to find a chassis to put my LTR in and take the HS stock and DBM off that and use it for the SPS Tactical.

If you are going to get rid of it, I will take it off your hands :)
