I have an old Remington 700 in .308 that requires a new barrel. What should I do for barrel? I would like to be able to change out my own barrels, maybe a .308 and 6.5 creedmoor. What would be the best method. I have a badger ordnance extended rail over for the barrel. I was thinking of Remage or maybe Barloc, but I would require a rail replacement? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, should I have the action trued? Would I need a new bolt for that?

Attached a picture of the rail.

remage from any of the number of quality makers.

you could true it, but unless there's a lot of sentimental value, you may be better off getting one of the new 'budget' customs for just a little more dough. nucleus, atlas, origin, tenacity

A Remage barrel would fit and work with your current rail. Probably the cheapest route.

A barloc setup would require a different rail, or shortening that one. Also probably going to require the Smith to have your action and make the barrel from a blank.

I wouldn't blueprint the action if both lugs are making contact as it is. Opening up the threads will make Remage barrels unsafe. You don't need a new bolt.

The single biggest improvement in feel/function for a 700 is getting the bolt handle timed.

For short action calibers it's not really necessary. You almost never hear of them bending (maybe in some 300/338 RUM or Lapuas). More often than not it just makes for fitment issues with whatever stock/chassis you have.

Put another way, make sure it will fit in your KRG, and if you want to feel warm/fuzzy it won't hurt anything to get a new one.
