Looking thru the parts box for a bolt to go in a RR serial# Remington 700 SA Receiver. Found what I thought was an old style from .308. It was too short! Now, I can't remember what it came out of? Here are a couple of pics of it next to a newer .308 (Remington 700) bolt. Please help me identify what it is! Got a headache trying to think back to the 70's - 80's when I assume it went into the parts box??

Are the 700 and Seven receivers similar enough that bolts work in either? I never owned a model Seven, so not something I would figure out on my own? I guess it could be a bolt that I acquired along the way and didn't ever verify? I did try it in my RR receiver...fit just fine except for the length.
I compared it to an old LA Remington 700 (30.06) bolt and looks to be the same, but shorter, and it went into the old receiver just fine as well...

No. Model 7’s are shorter. The 600/660’s are also shorter, as are the XP/XR actions and bolts - if memory serves, the 600’s and XP/XR’s did use the same bolt, however. Action bore diameters and raceways are the same, but obviously the body lengths aren’t, meaning they aren’t interchangeable.

So if you’ve never had a Model 7, 600, 660, or XP-100 or XR-100, then it’s looking like you picked up a bolt somewhere along the way. Maybe accidentally got swapped with someone.

Dang! Looks like the mystery is solved! Thanks to both of you for taking the time to educate me, and for not calling me a dumb ass on my first post!

One thing for sure, its easy to tell if it is a 600/660 or XP-100 bolt. They had a dog leg on the handle to put the bolt handle directly above the trigger of the 600/660 rifles. Also, early XP bolts had a different bolt shroud. Also, easy to tell the difference. We still own 3 XP’s and two have the old bolt shroud and the money gun has the new bolt shroud (Money gun, shot more perfect scores with it than all of our other XP’s combined)

Black stocked XP (the money gun) has the new bolt shroud and displays the dog leg bolt. The Fireball with the tan stock displays the old style shroud. Hard to see in this picture. Try to get a better picture later.

The later (more rare) XP-100R's had a more conventional bolt handle. Considering the rarity of the XP100's, and especially XP-100R's, I might be surprised if this is anything more than a Model 7 bolt, but it's clearly not a 700 short action bolt.

Agreed. These rear grip XP’s are based on the Model 7

I'll always have a preference for the center grip, single shot XPs.
Hopefully, before I get too old I'll be able to build or buy a Herrett's stocked XP in 6-BR.

A couple of years ago, someone on here sold a pair of beautiful Herrett's XP stocks. They went cheap too.
