I have been trueing a few Remington 700 actions lately and is it just me or does there seem to be a diference in the steel. A few months ago while lapping the bolt on a new action, the steel on the bolt lugs seemed pourous and would not clean up well. Last night after lapping the lugs on an old sportsman 78 they turned out beautiful. I have noticed similar differences while facing the receivers, retapping scope holes and threading the bolt handles. The new metal seems more pourous to me. I have searched for info with no success. Has anyone else had this experience with new off the shelf 700s.
