Remington 700 stock/mag option

I've been giving this an honest go to try and figure out the options I have for configuring my 700 into new and improved configs, but there is sooo much info and options out there I can't narrow it down with simple searches. So if someone could clarify for me I'd be ever so grateful.

I have a 700 ADL Varmint HB that I got a Hogue stock for, and got a new BM and box for and reused the follower and spring. Now I have a nifty new BDL. Here's my questions:

1)Is it possible to use this same Houge stock and use a Detachable Bottom Metal trigger guard? Do those DM triggers guards work on any BDL stock?

2)some DM trigger guards I've seen have posts that the screws set into, and some don't. Are they necessary, or just a bedding for the screws?

3) what are the options for 10 round mags if I had the right trigger guard? Does Remington make them, cuz I could only find 4 rounders at Midway.

4) I see that folks spend $200-$300 for HS and comparable trigger guards. Are the less expensive ones Remington makes that can be had for under $100 all that bad?

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

I hope you don't get chewed up here with those questions....
First, I'd look for another stock. Personally, I like McMillan A series, but HS, Manners, are fine choices.
Something else I've learned the hard way---Buy cheap, but twice. There is a reason some products are more $. It's because they are of superior quality.

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

Well, fair enough. I actually have a Savage 10 in a HS Precision stock. This Remy was going to be a hunting rifle. That Savage with it's bipod and Falcon Menace scope is not easily carried around walking in the woods all day, ya know? So I got this ADL cuz it's a 700, but not huge investment ($400 used) and pretty tote-around-able. I hated the stock though, and decided to upgrade it not knowing any better about the ADL/BDL differences. I don't exactly want to build a duplicate of the Savage I already have by putting another heavy duty stock onto it, but I do want something better than the flimsy Varmint stock it came in, ya know? Every other option has me getting a new trigger guard and mag setup.

All that aside, anything specific regarding my 4 questions?

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

Me personally, I like the Surgeon DBM....but I also have Badger, and CDI precision. All three use Accuracy International mags, which is a big plus. Don't know much bout the HS precision DBM, but can't recall anything bad I've heard about the HS system.
I do understand your not wanting to weight down your gun with a heavier stock....there's always a tradeoff! I'm just not sure how rigid the hogue stock is, not real sure if it is a good building block in your upgrade equation.

McMillan HTG series stock is a fine stock, without a lot of added weight, but it is a lot of added $ though....

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

That's another question I have: are AICS parts not the same as Remington factory? I don't quite understand the difference. Will a DM trigger guard for AICS mags not accept the original factory 4 rounder?

Still wondering about my OP questions

[cricket chirping].....

I have honestly tried to figure this out via the search here, but there aren't exactly any "how to" threads that explain these things for newbies. Almost seems like its implied you already know all these answers and own a $2K built rifle before jumping into topics. Just looking for some basic info; anyone got a link they could point me to?

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

remingtom bm will not work with aics mags.your cheapest rout would be cdi bm . midway has it for 209.00 .they have cheap mags or aics mags both will work.

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

GD,

I am not an "expert" but will share what I know on the topic. Background: There are three main patterns for Remington Model 700 stocks:

ADL is a blind magazine, all cartridges load and unload from the top.

BDL has a hinged floorplate on the bottom of the action. Cartridges load and unload from the top, or, can unload from the bottom by dropping the hinged floor plate open.

DBM - Detachable Box Magazine cartridges can load and unload from the top and the bottom.

1) Remington DBM magazines to the best of my knowledge only work with Remington DBM bottom metal and Rem DBM stocks. They have push buttons/bars on the sides of the magazine that require a cut out in both sides of the stock to operate. Kind of a "proprietary, all Remington" solution. A Remington BDL pattern stock will not work with Remington DBM bottom metal and magazines, unless you make the cut outs in the side of the stock to release the magazine.

2) HS Precision DBM bottom metal will bolt onto a Remington BDL pattern stock. It may or may not require additional inleting to open up the stock to properly fit the bottom metal. AS far as I know HS Precision magazines only work with HS Precision bottom metal. HS magazines are supposed to be dead nuts reliable. Personally, I like the HS 3 and 4 round magazines because they are rounded on the bottom, and tend to blend better with the bottom of a hunting rifle. You see the magazine. But, they look cleaner for a hunting/sporter rig.

3) Accuracy International (AI) makes a highend, custom "chassis" (stock) for Rem 700's for snipers, long range shooters etc. AI has developed a proprietary magazine design for use with their "chassis". AI mags are generally available through a number of sources. The AI mags are also supposed to be dead nuts reliable. As a result, a number of companies (eg: Badger, CDI, Surgeon) have developed DBM bottom metal products for Rem 700 BDL pattern stocks that readily accept AI magazines. These flavors of bottom metal again, may or may not require additional work to properly inlet the stock.

As stated in a previous post, the HS Precision / AI / Badger / CDI/... are all significant dollars. But this is an area where you do tend to get what you pay for. Also, for the name brands above, good tech support is only a phone call away. I was just on the phone with HS Precision 2 hours ago to confirm which magazine was appropriate for a .300H&H magnum that I am building.

Hopefully this was helpful without being too basic.

Warren

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

I would say send your stock to Jeff at CDI. For $269 you can send your stock to him and he will put his bottom metal in it and do the inletting. Get a few alpha or AI mags and you will be set. By the way Jeff is super fast, one week with shipping!

Re: Remington 700 stock/mag option

I ordered a B&C adjustable medalist for my .308 700pss. Its really great for the money for an adjustable. My only compliant is that it is heavy. But it does help with recoil. I also like the Hooper Ordnance DBM but you will have to do some inletting on the stock to make some room (for Sort Actions, the Long Action is supposed to be a drop in). I'd bed the DBM in as well to give the stock extra strength.

Right now that's my favorite for the money.

My favorite with more money is the same Hopper BDM with a McMillan A3-5. I've ordered a Tac Ops with the McMillan A3-5 300winmag.
