Hello, I am new to SHF and want some feedback on this set-up. I have owned my 700 VTR, 22" bbl with the Osprey Intl 4X16X50 for about 3 months. I have been working on a favorite load for this rifle. So far Varget 42.2g with Hornaday 168g A-Max bullets are producing constant 1/2 MOA 3-5 shot groups at 100yds I have the scope mounted with Brownells steel picatinny base, standard not 20 MOA, and Leupold weaver style rings.
I have some new loads made up to try for more distance, and accuracy. I just joined a new club with a 500 yd range. Also looking at Rem XCR Tactical long range or Target tactical, both in .308. Any load info and advice on rifle selection will be appreciated.
Also any info about the Osprey scopes is invited. I am very happy with mine. My friends with $800.00 leupolds are jealous. I got a great deal on it($125.00) because the box and caps were missing. The only problem I have had is the flats do not level out the crosshairs???
I think this is a good rifle set-up, but, want to hear from you pros out there, since I am going to start competing. I know the muzzel break is costing me some accuracy, and the farther out I go the more it will affect it- hence the new rifle. It will be hard to beat at 100yds, but, I want to know more about the 5R rifling(Target Tactical)vs std in the XCR or PSS(this was my first choice), ... is it worth the diff in $$$
This was a 4 inch rifle with boxed hunting ammo, reloading got sub MOA right off the bat. Bullet weight matching has been the key to sub 1/2 MOA with both Varget and IMR 4064. I have been happy with the VTR, and even killed a deer with it,but, the X Mark trigger... I agree with you guys on that, if I keep it I see Timney in the future.
Help me out guys, I am going looking this PM, and will read your comments this evening.
Thanks for the input.

Re: Remington 700 VTR .308 with Osprey scope

Thanks DAFAR for reminding me, but, YES. It does have the "toy" stock. If you notice all my alternative rifles are sold with aftermarket stocks. This factory stock is like for an air gun, weighs about a pound. I added a soft cheek piece, and bipod.

Re: Remington 700 VTR .308 with Osprey scope

I was wondering because I bought a VTR, unfortunately I did not shoot it much before I sent it off to turn it into a 260 remington.
However I still have the tupper ware stock and I put my 300 wsm stock remington 700 hunting rifle into it. I cant bed the dam thing but I was wondering what I should expect out of it

Re: Remington 700 VTR .308 with Osprey scope

I just got back from the gun store. I think I am going to turn this VTR into a 700 5R Mil-Spec Stainless steel, 24" with Bell&Carlson bedded stock. Is $999.00 a decent price??He said the Snipers from Ft Benning were buying them as fast as they came in... any suggestions??? The XCR was also seller but cost more, and no 5R rifling... I am going to do something tomorrow... He said that the Savage was a super tight shooter, but, you still have to buy a stock...
As for the VTR stock, it is cheap feeling and there is no way to bed it for sure... there is no material, I also read a forum where a guy tried to free float his, and the stock warped without being in contact with the barrel. That is why I am going to bite the bullet and get the 5R, I went to check out the PSS, but for $100 more...

Re: Remington 700 VTR .308 with Osprey scope

Thanks for the honest answers, I bought a 700 SS Mil -Spec 5-R today. If I was getting sub 1/2 MOA groups with that VTR, I should be working one holers with this beauty. I am in love.
I was totally unaware of this rifle until after I got the VTR.
I love Remington Rifles, but, I have to say that the stock on the VTR is total junk. BUT, with the groups I was shooting this thing will be a tac driver with a good B&C or HS stock on it. They are making a new remington 700 VTR in 26" bbl w/o muzzle break with a B&C Medalist stock for 1400... but I got the 5-R.
For great info check out ; tobystactical.com

Re: Remington 700 VTR .308 with Osprey scope

I have a VTR in 223. I have to agree that the standard stock is a piece of junk. I put a HS PST082 stock on it so far.

It shoots well enough for me. I get 1/4" consistently from it with 60g Hornady V-maxes. It also shoots Barnes Varmint Grenades at about a 1/4" as well. With the same POI at 100.

I use it as a varmint gun and I love it. Albeit it is my first centrefire.

I have just upgraded my die set too, so hopefully I can shrink my groups a bit further.
