I have a 700 VLS with a recoil lug that is substantially out of alignment with the bottom of the receiver. Will post pics later. Funny thing is that this is a one hole five shot rifle. Anyone else have one considerably out of alignment that still shoots sub moa?

Re: Remington 700's recoil lug straightness

If your talking about the clock positioning of the lug in relation to the receiver, then it's not surprising that it still shoots well.

So long as its not so far out of position that it creates a bind on the stock as its assembled it shouldn't affect anything. Obviously its preferable to see it timed up properly, but flat is flat regardless of the orientation.

Just means someone was off on their game when they installed the barrel. Tools are made specifically for this stuff that make it a no brainer if used correctly.

Yes - I have seen all sorts of misalignements in stock rifles that still shot great. If it shoots that good, don't rock the boat!

If it's just driving you nuts there is a fix that a guy can do at home.

A brass hammer. Just hold it steady and give it a good whack or two. Its amazing how easy it is to rotate a lug this way.
