I just picked up a used remington 7400 in 243 for my son to use to hunt deer this fall. This is the first semi-auto I've ever had so I was just looking for the best cleaning procedure for it. The reciever looks pretty clean but the barrel looks pretty dirty. I haven't shot it yet but I wanted to clean it up real good before I shoot it.

Also, it may be a little late now seeing as how I have already bought it, but is there anything I need to know about this gun, good/bad? It will just be used for deer hunting with factory ammo.

Remove those two pins that go from one side of the receiver to the other and drop out the trigger parts group so you can wash it out and off thoroughly in a tray of mineral spirits or gasoline or brake cleaner - then after drying goop it up with any kind of grease to keep grit away from the parts, wipe of excess, stick it back up in the reciever after you also wash off the bolt and lugs and barrel lugs, cleaning the barrel with a bore snake, whose first half has been squirted good with Kroil, chamber to muzzle, carefully pulling the snake straight out the muzzle.
With a bent rod, clean the chamber with a brush wrapped with a cloth, caring to not damage the rifling at the throat.
Dry the chamber with rubbing alcohol unless you're storing, then leave it kroiled.
Lube the lugs with a small amount of grease.
Excuse the run on sentence above. The purpose was to show cleaning can be simple.

By the way, you know you are not supposed to use bore foam in a gas operated semi auto though. I think the 7400 is a gas gun if I recall correctly.

I have never cleaned a 7400 but way back I cleaned several 742 rifles. If I were doing it today I would pull the trigger group out and spray it down good with Gun Scrubber. Then spray out the chamber good and bore snake the barrel. When everything is clean lightly coat the moving parts with CLP.
